So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 - 2008

No surprise about Susie, semi-surprised about Marquis. Thought it would be Chris. Interesting that two weeks in a row both contestants sent home were in the same couple. I don’t remember that happening before. As far as I remember they keep kicking off 2 at a time until 5 couples are left and they also start switching partners.

Flaminco dancer did not impress me. A little too into himself. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen heels as high as Cat’s. At least 4 inches.

Anyone else think this show would be more interesting and a better test of dancing ability if they changed partners every week?

I think Marquis got screwed–he had by far the most interesting solo.

It would be more interesting if they changed partners every week. But one of the challenges for the dancer is showing versatility in each genre and with different choreographers. If they kept switching partners, you could have a scenario where one person gets assigned the same style (and choreographer) several times in a row, and that would be unfair.

I don’t know how much of a factor the solos actually play in the judges’ decisions. At this point they pretty much know each dancer’s strengths and weaknesses, and I don’t know what anyone could show in 30 seconds that would actually provide new information.

Okay, now that I’m getting to know the dancers – which guy is Debbie Allen’s protege, again?

Will, I think.

It seems to me there should be some way to ensure that wasn’t a problem. How about this: There are two hats each week containing the same set of dance style/choreographer names. The boys draw from one hat, the girls from the other. The couples are matched up by which ones draw the same dance style for the week.

Is there any rule now to prevent a couple repeating a choreographer if a couple draws him again? If so, just apply the same rule to each gender separately.

Luck of the draw might still bring the same partners together more than once, but that could be OK.

I agree with the surprise/ disappointment about Marquis. I loved his solo, although there was one time when his shirt unfortunately went up over his face and just broke the whole rhythm of it.

I was glad to see Susie go home rather than Comfort. I feel like this is a neat opportunity for Comfort to try out different things and she seems like the type to get a lot out of that. I loved her energy and freshness the first week. That said, she seemed tired Thursday night, and for it being her style, I’m not sure she actually nailed that krump routine as much as she should have. Was she perhaps on pain medication for her arm? I also think that she will struggle to get that partner chemistry really going with Chris. Not that I dislike Chris as a dancer, though.

I think all of my high heeled shoes are 4" heels. I have seen 5" (which are hard for me to walk in) with normal soles, and 6"+ with a platform to raise the front of the foot as well.

I thought Chris’ solo was the weakest. I wasn’t surprised that they sent Susie home. What confidence she displayed in the audition was sorely lacking in the second week.

I think they match up partners due to height. There seem to be quite a few guys who are on the shorter side, where the girls they pair them up with are almost as tall as the guys. Picture Kourtni and Gev being matched up–how ridiculous would that look?

In one of the earlier seasons I think that they did change partners every week right from the beginning. As I recall what they would do is have the one draw for their partner and the named partner then drew for the dance. I thought it was better when they changed it to create partnerships because it allows for the creation of some chemistry between the dancers and when they are trying to learn new dances in styles they are not familiar with week after week, at least they do not have to figure out the style and personality of the person they’re dancing with. I think the result overall is a higher quality performance.

What the HELL do they have Kherington and Twitch wearing?

Damn, Will can make* disco * look good. He’s freakin’ amazing.

Yeah, I think this is one of those times that disco won’t be the kiss of death. That routine was awesome.

Same goes for Kourtni’s top half, but those (peacock?) leggings were sweet.

I still think my absolute favorite couple is Mark and Chelsie H. Their dance over the business man leaving her behind almost had me in tears, and with the exception of it being a little tepid last week, I’ve pretty much felt that way for them since the beginning.

Although I was glad to see something more exciting for our super tall friends, Kourtni and Matt. Hopefully, they’ll get some focus this time. Overall though, most of the dances are coming across as lackluster at best, even though the contestants seem better than before. I wonder if it’s a pairing issue at all? Or if changes in some of the choreographers has something to do with it?

Pretty good show last night, but I have to agree with Faithfool. Most routines lack that spark of originality (with notable exceptions) even though the overall caliber of the dancers is better than in prior seasons. Perhaps they’re just giving the dancers basic routines to begin with and it will progressively get harder as the less talented are weaned out. All the choreographers are the same as last year with the exception of newcomer Sonya last night, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

Twitch/Kerrington HipHop Guest judge called this style “Lyrical HipHop” and I really liked it. Story was a little trite, but cute. Didn’t think that technically it was all that difficult, but it was executed well. Entertaining. B+

Gev/Courtney Rhumba There was definite chemistry and passion between these two. Hard to believe that they never danced this style before. Best 1/2 dress so far this season. I think Gev will be in trouble with a taller, larger partner. A

Chris/Comfort[** Jazz Agree with judges that the dance lacked the agression and strength called for. She was better than Chris as she seemed stronger and more animalistic. Not so good. C

Will/Jessica Disco Jessica seemed a little heavy in the lifts. Also, in the rehersals her lack of confidence is masked by her goofing off and joking around. She grinned too much during the routine. Will OTOH was superb. He had just the right attitude (that macho, narcistic flair) needed to pull off the disco genre. Jess just isn’t good enough, but he is probably making her look much better than she is. B

**Matt/Kourtni Contemporary There seemed to be a lot of kinetic energy with no direction or cohesion. No chemistry whatsoever. All I saw from Matt was him pulling on his tie and high kicking. Agree with Nigel about the costumes. Totally distracting. C

Mark/Chelsie HipHop Was it just me or was Mark the spitting image of David Tennant’s Dr. Who? Loved it. Great emotion and the characters were totally believable. Stacatto movements very sharp. A
**
Joshua/Katee** Samba Joshua was fantastic. Hip action, sexy attitude. His eyes were just devouring her. And those buns were mouth watering. Katee’s hips weren’t as mobile as they should have been and she definitely wasn’t comfortable with the seductress characterization. Too much grinning and not enough smolder. Liked Courney’s 1/2 dress better. Overall though, very good routine. A

Bottom Three: Chris/Comfort, Kourtni/Matt, Chelsea/Thayne. Going home: Chris, Chelsea

I agree w/the bottom 3, but I’m not too sure about the woman ejectee. I really don’t see what the big deal is with Kourtni–in general, or w/her last “Life-saving” dance. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if she left, though I agree Chelsea isn’t in too strong a position either.

I couldn’t care less about the 3 dull males in that grouping, but Chris is the dullest of the dull.

I agree–Chris is blah.

I posted my summary here.

My big question of the day is… WHO THE HELL DRESSES THESE PEOPLE!?
