So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 - 2008

I don’t believe it! I actually called one right. Bottom3 AND who went home. Look now folks, won’t happen again this century. So remember, you saw it here first.

Group number a little strange. Did like the costumes though.

What was with Cat’s dress? Looked like she was wearing it upside down or something. Liked the color and the bottom, but that top was just beyond all reason.

Nigel had good advice for Thayne and Matt. It’s easy to get stuck in that bottom 3 catagory with little hope of getting out.

Well, we get a new partnership next week, Thayne/Chelsie. Should prove interesting. Glad Matt got to stay, but he needs to step up his game and show off his amazing talent during his performances.

Probably will, actually – your commentaries have been spot-on.

So, another good week, good routines, and a new choreographer. Looks like Shane Sparks is off the show, but I don’t miss him. Another great showing for Mary, I think she’s the best judge on the panel. Good energy, a winning smile, beautiful voice, and insightful comments. The sparkly outfit looked great.

Poor Mark! I don’t think they should have drawn attention to that guy’s freaky pinkies, now they’re all I notice. (Like Cat’s nose) It’s especially noticeable during all that mugging for call-in votes. I now skip all the mugging entirely.

I forget which girl has the tattoo on the back of her head, but I kept wishing on Wednesday that they would show her from the back just acting normal or dancing normally or something at moderate range (not extreme close-up, but not a full body shot either) so I could get a sense for how visible it is in daily life.

But if they did, I’d taken my eyes off the screen. Did not watch last night’s show at all, for reasons which have nothing to do with the show.

As Nigel pointed out, at least twice, here does seem to be some settling into ranks.

Those who have been in the bottom 3: Kourtni(2)/Matt(2), Jessica(1)/Will(1) Comfort(2)/Thane (2)
Those who haven’t.

I’ve posted my recap with my opinions of the show. I knew Chris was going home. From the girls I had no idea. I’m glad it wasn’t Kourtni–I like her

It was a surprise when they just called out Chelsea first and said “you’re going home” without any buildup drama or fake-outs or anything.

Isn’t the new partnership Thayne/Comfort? I am looking forward to seeing Comfort with a different partner. While there may have been some weaknesses in her own performances, Chris was not a good fit for her.

It is Kourtni who has the tatoo on the back of her head. You would never see it unless she had the back of her hair up. Based on her usual hairstyle I don’t think you’d see it at all in everyday life.

You’re absolutely right. His partner is Comfort. My bad. Does anyone remember at what point they only send one person home each week? We’re down to six couples, the magic 12. How many weeks are left for the show to run? That should give us the right idea.

In the past, they’ve always dismissed by couples until the finale. The finale came when they got down to two couples. Each person danced with each of the others (B1G1 B1G2 B1B2 B2G1 B2G2 G1G2), and then they dismissed them individually from 4th up to 1st.

So, with seven couples left, there are five more weeks and then the finale – if they don’t change things up, of course.

How do you begin when there are 14 (fourteen!) dances? It’s really difficult for me to keep up with everyone’s names this year. It’s hard to make an impact when you have that many dances. I had to freeze the last few minutes to copy their names down.

The highlight for me was “Alone” choreographed by Mandy Moore. Ooh, very sexy routine though I agree that Jessica is emotionally distant from her partner. In fact, I liked both of Moore’s routines.

I was really impressed by Chelsie tonight. She kind of reminds me of Alicia Silverstone so I tend to dismiss her, but she did really well tonight.

Komfort & Thayne? Okay, I guess, but completely forgettable.

Kherrington & Twitch just have amazing chemistry. I actually liked the pase doble better than that weird Mia Michaels routine. They get bonus points for showing Twitch’s abs twice.

Katee is also very impresive, though that hair pouf in the first number was very distracting. The Mia Michaels routine was good though not orgasmic.

Courtney & Gev don’t have an ounce of charisma between the two of them.

Kourtni & Matt need to go, IMO. If you can’t sexy up a mambo you need to go home.

P.S. Gawd, I wish the judges would quit gushing all over Mia Michaels.
P.P.S. Nigel was kind of pissy tonight. And Mary was screechier than usual.
P.P.P.S. Whoever talked Cat into wearing that horrific dress should be taken to the woodshed and beaten with a rubber hose.

Yeah, I have to agree. Keeping up with 14 different dances is tough. My highlights…

Least Impressive: Mia’s bed routine. Not that I minded a shirtless Twitch, but there just wasn’t much going on beside flower slinging.

Most Improved: Jessica. I was beginning to wonder if she’d be headed for the bottom three tomorrow night, but she greatly stepped up her game. I liked her so much in the “Alone” number that I’m going to have to watch it again. Plus, abs aplenty from Will to score that one as a huge win.

Not Buying It: For whatever reason, Kherington isn’t coming across as the real deal. She’s more like watching a really talented student in the Homecoming Review or something. Further, neither does Matt (who I think I’d like if he could find his niche) or sadly, Joshua. He’s an awesome, powerful performer, but his work typically doesn’t resound with me as being genuine. < shrug > Just don’t know about that, however, I’m also beginning to get a sneaking suspicion that I feel even less enamored of Katee. Perhaps time will tell differently.

Unfortunately Will Need to Go: Kourtni. :frowning: Which is so freakin’ sad, because I think she’s terrific. Her size though, or anyone’s lack of knowing what to do about / with her, are damning her chances of lasting much longer. By the same token, I don’t think that Gev or Comfort is up to par either. Not being able to expand terribly against their own styles will soon be obvious, in my humble opinion, by low voting turnout.

My Top Favorites: In order are Mark, Chelsie and Will. The other Courtney doesn’t do anything for me and Thayne creeps me out for some reason. < another shrug > I guess that only leaves Twitch, who is completely adorable, but is hovering under my radar other wise.

Judges, Etc.: He could have handled it much better, but I can completely understand why Nigel lost it and told the boo-ers to shut up. Geez does that get annoying. I’m kind of meh at the hip hop this year. It’s pretty much seemed to lose all it’s bite now that Shane has gone. Much of the entire wardrobe staff needs to get thee to the day glo courtesy phone stat! The 80s called and they all want their Wham memorabilia back. And I love Cat. She truly comes across as incredibly sweet. I think I could watch her on a talk show depicting tragic events.

P.S. I like Mia (although her stuff tonight left me cold) well enough, but you’re right on the money with them kissing her ass. Everything, every damn time, isn’t perfect. Enough already!

I’ve posted my thoughts. This was yet another example of me not getting contemporary, especially when Mia Michaels choreographs it. sigh

As usual, Cat’s dress sucked. But I loved her hair!

Wow. Lots of dancing and hardly any filler from rehersals. Loved it. Cat’s hair was awesome, she looked like a totally different person, but that dress? Ugh. Her dresses are always just a little bizarre. On with the dancers.
My breakdown:
Jessica/Will
Jive ** Speed and bounce were good, cool over the shoulder lift. Didn’t like that Will always had head turned towards Jess even in the side by side. Liked her dress. So So ** B
Lyrical Jazz Have no idea what lyrical jazz or regular jazz is for that matter. Know the music, but not the dance. May I just say that Will w/o shirt had me mopping up the drool off the floor. Never missed a beat with that shirt prop, and it did not distract from the dancing. I thought it was practically x-rated with the steam and passion coming through. HOT HOT HOT ** A**

Comfort/Thayne
Broadway Thought it had a lot of energy and I thought the technique was good. Comfort might not be as good technically, but she sure knows how to project the proper emotions on stage. Eyes always drawn to her. Red dress awesome. ** B+**
**Smooth Waltz ** Seemed there were slight pauses between moves at times instead of the continuous flow you would expect. His demeanor was rather flat. Lift was lovely. B

Kourtni/Matt **
Hip Hop Her white scarf was distracting, that was all you noticed. Didn’t feel a connection between them, moves had no snap. Pretty dull. C
Mambo Chemistry was just not there. 1st lift wasn’t too good and I felt the music grew in intensity and speed towards the end and their dance stayed flat. Not impressed. ** B-

Chelsea/Mark
Jazz ** Dance with the lip smacking in music and dance. Thought they got even the small movements perfectly. Emotion great, and very together on steps. Gloves were a little strange. A
Foxtrot Blue dress with puffy feathers all over, did not care for it and it did nothing to accentuate Chelsea’s lines. The lifts were nice. Overall pretty forgettable. ** B

Twitch/Kerrington
Paso Doble ** The use of the black capes in the opening made them look like a couple of vampires ready to pounce. Aggressive in the dance but didn’t feel the passion between them. Her dress was not flatterin either (what’s with wardrobe?) ** B-
Contemporary Mia’s bed routine. Very physical and forceful. Routine definitely showcased Twitch leaving Kerrington as merely and accessory. Rose petals were cute once, but then they were predictable and boring. ** A for Twitch B for Kerrington and B- for routine**

Katee/Joshua
Contemporary ** Couple rushing around and not connecting. Loved it. The very first expression, before the dance even began just held you and they had me all the way through. The move of the flying/running across the stage was fabulous. They totally comminted to their characters. Her hair was yuk though. A
Westcoast Swing May I just say that I love Benji and his exciting choreography. Overall a good performance. Lifts seemed effortless. Only criticism was that Joshua’s free arm seemed a little limp at times. This is my favorite couple so far. ** A-

Courtney/Gev
Hip Hop Arms too soft, movements not sharp or big enough BLAH C
Broadway Tourists in New York. She was more believable, animated, hardly noticed Gev at all. Camera was off at times and you couldn’t see both dancers. Thinking back all I can really remember is her yellow skirt and dazed expression as she looked up. I probably graded this higher just because I like broadway so much. ** B**

**Bottom Three Courtney/Gev Kourtni/Matt Comfort/Thayne****Going Home ** Much harder than last week, but I choose Gev and Kourtni.

The Top couples last night, in order:

Joshua/Katee
Mark/Chelsea
Twitch/Kherrington
Will/Jessica
Gev/Courtney
Thayne/Comfort
Matt/Kourtni

That last couple were saved by their solos last week, neither of which impressed me one iota. I think they’re definitely destined for the bottom 3 (and I would choose both of them to go), but you can’t underestimate how the judges will view their solos, which means Jessica* and Thayne are the most vulnerable.

*Yes, I think Jessica & Will (who is clearly out of her league) will get less votes, even though they had a better night than Gev/Courtney.

If I had to guess who the final 3 in each sex will be, I’d say:

MEN: Joshua, Twitch, Will (alternate: Mark)
WOMEN: Chelsea, Katee, Kherrington (alternate: Comfort)

I think I’m going to go out and buy a lottery ticket. It’s definitely getting harder as the dancers are all so good. From prior weeks it looks like Thayne and Comfort will probably go home next week. We’ll have to wait and see how lucky they are in their draw. I thought Comfort’s solo was pretty bad. No razzle dazzle at all. She’s very lucky to still be there. Gev’s routine was phenomenal. One of the few solos that was a true routine rather than a bunch of steps strung together to music.

Wasn’t that hip hop dancer bizarre? I don’t think his bones are made out of the same stuff as the rest of humanity. What do you think about a dance off? Don’t remember who the other dancer was that they were referring to, but it sounds like it would be fun.

I can’t wait to see this dance-off!
I’m kind of glad they didn’t get rid of Thayne and Comfort this week, though I think she, at least, will probably be gone after next. I’d like to see them go one more week together to see how it goes.

I’m really enjoying this season; even the worst dancers are very good!

I’ve posted my recap of the results show I wasn’t surprised at who left.

Gev’s solo was the highlight for me. Creative, athletic, very cool!

I was sorry to see Kourtni go, but can see why it happened. I agree that Thayne and Comfort are likely to go next week, unless someone else really screws up. I like Comfort, but she hasn’t been strong enough to carry a partnership. The chemistry was a little better with Thayne than with Chris, though. It’s a bit of a shame that she’s had to do it the whole time. Jessica wouldn’t be strong enough to carry a partnership, either, but being partnered with Will she hasn’t had to. Twitch and Kherrington are probably both strong enough to carry a partnership, but being paired together they’ve just cruised.

Agree, Gev’s solo was outstanding – made it clear what he’s doing in this competition. It’s been hard to tell, given the dominance of Twitch and Will.
