I see some people go on and I could see why they think they’re good dancers (still don’t get why they think they’d actually win the competition though).
I always like it when the judges say they’re not good and they take it gracefully.
“You stink.”
“Well, thank you very much for the opportunity. I am very glad to meet you.”
I got a kick out of the one red-headed guy a couple nights ago with the long braids and funny facial hair. He was a pretty bad dancer and seemed satisfied enough from their initial harsh comments to just say OK, thanks and leave. But Nigel made him stick around for more abuse and they guy clearly just wanted to go, having learned that he’s not good enough for the show. But Nigel wasn’t having any of it.
Nigel: Now you’re just being rude.
Guy: Now you’re being rude.
Dancing guys are frequently teased and made fun of and their masculinity questioned. They simply don’t attempt dancing in the numbers women do because they’re labeled sissies. I don’t understand that at all. A guy who can dance well gets the chicks, has the hot bod, etc. You’d think they’d be the envy of the rest of the dudes.
The thing about dancing though, is that most people are shit dancers (myself included). Social dancing (at weddings and parties in clubs) is as much about having the balls to shake your ass, legs, head, whatever. And if you have some confidence, that sells the dance. So horrible ginger bellbottom guy probably gets hoots and hollers of encouragement when he gets out on the dance floor, and hence, a delusion is born.
The producers of these shows always bring out some saps as cannon fodder. I applaud that guy for knowing that and not taking their “feedback” so seriously. He was being used for the audience’s entertainment, he did his thing, and they didn’t like it. What’s the use in hearing their “criticism?”
I was really glad when Adam Shankman got up there and danced. It was nice, not only to see what they were trying to say when they said that the Lindy Hopper was good for a recreational dancer. Shankman was really good! It’s nice to see that at least one of the judges has dance chops!
Ugh. I really lost all respect I had for Tyce. He always seemed a bit full of himself, but I had no idea he was *that *obnoxious. Together with Sonya from last week, that’s two choreographers I’d very much prefer not to see judge again.
I think they both had points. Yes, Nigel should probably just have waved him off or something, but I do agree that quasi-rave guy was rude. He knew he wasn’t going places, he simply wanted to show off his dance. Which is pretty much just taking up everybody’s time. e Loved Evan and his brother.
I just got around to watching the last two audition episodes. Some really good dancers this year.
The ones I find myself especially impressed with are the ones who have the strength to make their bodies do whatever they want them to do. This, of course, takes balance and flexibility too, but it’s the strength that always impresses me. It’s the difference between a leap that you don’t even see coming and a leap where you see the dancer rearing up for it.
The only two guys I really saw it from were Brandon (the black guy Mary cried over), and Evan* (Gene Kelly reborn).
Adequate strength is evident is most of the obviously talented girls, but rarely do I see the overwhelming strength required for certain off-balance and lateral movements. I saw it in Gabi (arthritis chick) and Arielle (five-head).
*: Evan was a favorite of mine from last season, and he’s improved. He will be the one I’m pulling for again this year.
Not sure who it was, but I agree she looked good, in more ways than one. I didn’t rewind to check, but I do believe I saw her in the screaming group of continuing dancers afterwards.
That was pretty fun to watch, and the girl kept up. What I wasn’t aware of was that Shankman directs big Hollywood movies.
Whenever I see the choreographers dance, I’m reminded how raw the contestants are, no matter how good they may be. Once, last season, that short choreographer with the French-Canadian accent (Jean Marc) demonstrated a move or two to his couple and was jaw-droppingly graceful.
I’m glad to see the Evan love. He was my absolute favorite from last year’s auditions, and I was crushed when he didn’t make it to the top 20. I’d imagine that barring injury, he’s a shoe-in for this year’s. His brother was cute too, although I wasn’t a huge fan of his tapping.
So Vegas week is compressed into one episode tonight, and the judges are being extremely tough from the get-go. Some surprising cuts, and some harsh criticisms. And somebody needs to drop a house on Mia Michaels.
I missed the first half hour or so of tonight’s episode; what happened to the redhead girl who is/was Katie’s roommate last year? I didn’t see her there at all. Did she get cut, and how bad was she given as she made it to the top 21 last year?
They cut her, although I don’t think they should have. She wasn’t that good but not nearly as bad as that Gabby girl that they gave multiple chances to.
And when they cut her it was with plenty of comments about how they had really high expectations for her, and she wasn’t meeting them. Similar comments were directed towards Brandon.
It seems to me to be rather early to be cutting dancers who are, in my opinion, clearly outperforming some other dancers just because they have not yet met the bar in the judges’ minds.
And yeah, Mia was in rather nasty form tonight I thought. I don’t recall her being like that in the past. She would tell dancers what she thought, but I seem to recall it being much more in the spirit of positive criticism. That’s not what I saw tonight.
With all her talk of being “organically pure” and other new age crap, I don’t even care for her dances. She also made a really bad fashion choice in wearing an altered USMC jacket at a time when that decision was especially poor.
Give me Wade or even Mary over her, everyday, thanks.
I agree that it seemed some were being held up to standards they couldn’t possibly meet, based on what others had said from the auditions solos.
I really like Evan. I think he’ll make top 20. I also think Askar (the ballroom Asian chick) will make top 20. That’s about as far as I’m willing to go on predictions this time around.
I’ve liked one dance from her. That was the Lacy and Kameron dance from season 3 to Elisa’s “Dancing.” Maybe I can add the one with Heidie and her cousin from season 2. Not good numbers for how many times she’s choreographed. She just annoys me fully. And she was being a rightful bitch, I think.
I hope he and his brother both make it. His brother seems to have some talent choreographing. He did his brother’s audition and I can only assume he did his group’s also.
I have to admit, I do like most of the dances Mia has choreographed for the show; I just think she comes across as a hateful, hateful person.
I agree that Natalie and Brandon seemed to be held to a much higher standard than the other dancers. Both were dancing beautifully every time they were onscreen. If they weren’t meeting expectations, I have to wonder exactly what the judges were expecting!
And I am going to be heartbroken if the “Broadway Brothers” don’t do really well in the competition. They’re both adorable!
