So You Think You Can Dance -- SYTYCD -- Summer 2011

You may have noticed that they continued to frame her closer and closer (to lose the cleavage) as the night went on.

The final four is a good one. The two people who needed to go did. This may be a showdown for the ladies as Final 2 contenders. We’ll see…

I think Melanie is a clas by herself. Then I think Sasha is in the next class by herself. then Marko then Tadd. I think Sasha falls behind Melanie, because even though she is a extremely talented dancer (and h er solos I think are the best), she seems incapable of softening up when the routine calls for it. She often seems to actually overpower the men, which is not necessarily a good thing (I did think the wall routine was outstanding, though). Melanie is just so versatile and as was stated is an excellent actress as well as dancer.

I have to admit I’m pretty disappointed and I’m not really enjoying this season that much, not compared to previous seasons. The music selections the choreographers are making are TERRIBLE, the routines are super contemporary heavy. Even the supposed “jazz” routines are really just contemporary routines in disguise, and there are almost no other genres being done at all.

No pop, no disco, only the rarest of Broadway numbers, and I never thought I’d say this, but I even miss that there’s no krump. Even Sonya Tayeh, whose twisted jazz routines I normally love, has a HEAVY contemporary bent to her routines this year.

I’m not getting all of the sobbing and “chills” over the mass quantity of contemporary routines either, almost every single one this season has looked exactly the same, right down to that ugly “pick the girl up and have her hold her legs up in that awkward sitting down/heels cocked/arms held out” lift.

I feel as if the dancers have kind of gotten ripped off this season, they’ve not really all had the opportunity to explore the wide range of genres that they have in seasons past.

Definitely, CanvasShoes! Agree with you on all points.

Very disappointing season. And I also agree that we’ve seen too many of that “three sides of a square” lift. Some great freaking dancers this year – too bad they haven’t had much chance to show their range. Contemporary, contemporary, contemporary, ballroom; jazz, ballroom, contemporary, contemporary. The broadway numbers (and Tyce just gets suckier and suckier) have also been not-so-thinly disguised contemporary.

I agree with the disappointment of this season. I think I’ve said it before up thread but it’s like every dance, especially contemporary, has one of the two stories: either the girl is at a crossroads in the relationship or the strong woman or something is attacking the guy.

Well, I called the top four.

As much as I love Melanie, and think that Sasha, Tadd and Marko are great, I agree that the variety of dance and quality of choreography have been lackluster.
At one point all the judges were agreeing that this was the best crop of dancers ever. Wha!? Do they not remember Season 4? That season had THREE “power couples.” Winner Joshua with his equal Katee, “Twitchington,” and the perfectly/bizarrely paired Chelsie and Mark. Add Courtney and Gev, plus this kick-ass routine, and it has yet to be matched.

Really, that’s just standard competition show puffery. Every season has the best/most amazing whatever. For example, look at how the judges on America’s Got Talent keep yammering about what a stupendously talented line up they got this year – in a season where they’ve only got maybe a half-dozen really top notch performers. The talent on offer was so low they ended up putting through people who totally flubbed the Las Vegas level auditions. Hell, they put through a fat guy with about two dance steps!

Bit what else are they going to say? “We’ve only got second class talent this year. Don’t bother watching us, see what’s on offer on the other channels.”?

I’m disappointed in this season, too. I love Melanie, but that’s about it. I liked Tadd a lot, but he’s been hamming it up to an annoying degree, and his solos center way too heavily on how he can walk/jump around on his hand(s). Sasha has grown on me a lot, since that dance to “Misty Blue” with Twitch. Marko is a great dancer, but he doesn’t actually stand out. I liked Ricky better. Caitlin was completely forgettable.

This season is indeed missing variety in routines. I really really miss Wade Robson. He has such a unique style, but also each of his dances has its own unique style. And he really knows how to pick good songs. I even miss Mia. Sonja’s shtick is growing thin and, as someone mentioned, very contemporary. Tabatha and Napoleon do way too many routines, and they all feel the same. Where’s disco? Where’s the good, hard hip hop? I’m not a huge fan of the ballroom stuff, but I would have liked to see more of it just for the sake of variety.

And the music has been horrible. Just… blech. The only routines I’ve liked enough to rewatch have been Tadd and Lauren’s jazz number to “Another One Bites the Dust” (which was actually pretty weak in choreography but the music and the fun they were having with it more than made up for that lack), Melanie and Neil’s contemporary dance to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (which was super over-dramatic but perfect for the music), Jordan and Tadd’s crazy weird dance to that Olafur Arnalds song (even though the whole routine was mostly Jordan flinging her legs around), Melanie and Marko’s hip hop number to “I Got You” (which was good, but mostly just the same old same old from Tabatha and Napoleon), the aforementioned Sasha and Twitch “Misty Blue,” and Ryan and Ricky’s zombie jazz dance to “Fashion” (which landed them in the bottom). And that’s it. Contrast with season 5, when I wanted to watch every single one of Janette and Brandon’s dances eight million times. Because the songs were great. And the dancers had a lot of personality.

I’m with you. Season 4 is still easily my favorite of all of them. The dancers all seemed absurdly charismatic that season, too.

And let’s face it, not all guest judges are created equal. Katie – did you do a single “critique” that didn’t involve the word “powerful”?

At least everyone got at least one “boy, that didn’t work at all, did it?” number tonight – the disco, the cha-cha, and that gumboot step (!!!). Hm, wait, was Tadd in all three of those?

Disco was Melanie and Marko.

Oh, right. Well, then, all four people got torpedoed by a genre out of their styles that they really couldn’t make look good in the time allotted.

Though it wasn’t commented on by the judges, so possibly I’m seeing things, Marko simply looked tire during that last number.

Not the best of nights and I think a lot of it was a bad night for the choreographers (though I imagine that having to learn four routines in 5 1/2 days would tend to reduce performance quality too)

Very disappointing finale. Nobody was on the ball last night.

Hard decision for me, but I voted for Sasha. Melanie is extraordinarily graceful, but she doesn’t quite move me the way Sasha does. I’ll be happy if either of them wins, though.

And I just want to take Marko home with me. Little cutie.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed last night. One of the most dull finales I’ve seen.

I think they just loaded way too much on the dancers. At the beginning they have 20 dancers to fill two hours, now it’s all up to four.

It would have been so easy to simply dump the all-star dances, giving the contestants only three routines to learn.

Or the solos – none of which showed us anything we hadn’t already seen.

I think four routines plus a solo – and, presumably, a group number and repeats of dances they’ve done over the course of the season for tomorrow night – is simply too much to ask. In all the other seasons, haven’t the finalists done three routines in the finale?

Two hours to give us the payoff. They are really milking this.

Sonya is weird, but oddly enjoyable.

Hey, NCB, long time no see – what a treat!

The show is airing on the East Coast, so we know who came in 4th:

Tadd. Yay. That is the correct person for the first elimination. Or the 17th, depending on how you’re counting.
