I received a gift of frozen reindeer sausage from a relative in Alaska.
Is it interchangeable in any sausage recipe? I’ve never actually eaten any before. If it weren’t received already frozen, I’d taste a bit of it first, then decide for myself if it were similar enough to, say, kielbasa, to work in certain recipes. But I hate to thaw it out prior to knowing what I’m going to do with it. Besides, I only know one sausage recipe that I like, and I could use some more.
So - anyone got any suggestions/recipes to share? Thanks in advance.
I’ve never eaten reindeer sausages, but I have had venison ones which I suspect would be similar. Personally, I’d just cook 'em up as normal - IMO best way is fried with a tiny bit of oil, long and slow - and serve with some light veg and mashed potato. Not too many strong flavours, as they’ll be quite gamey. Maybe a bit of light gravy too. Mmm. If you don’t want them, pitch them this way.
Is this homemade reindeer sausage, or is a commercial brand? The commercial brands have only a small amount of reindeer meat in them, they are mostly pork.
I will definitely have to look at the label now, as it did appear commercially packaged. Not that I dislike pork (quite the contrary), but I’ll be sorely disappointed if it turns out not to have as much flavor as other game meats I’ve tried. Plus, it will probably not be as heart-healthy if it’s mostly pork than if it’s all reindeer/caribou.
