Someone explain the MMP (Monday Morning Post) to me

I have this vague idea that Rue DeDay got a new job or something and stopped posting, or posts with less frequency, or something, and that we’re filling in on an ad hoc basis for his weekly post. I also have observed that the Monday Morning Posts usually have high reads and replies, though it’s not readily apparent why. My questions are…

Why?
What is this all about? (I must know)
How is it decided who posts the MMP? The Illuminati?
If there’s no governing body, why haven’t we seen multiple MMPs?
and finally,
Why?

And: Yes, I know C K Dexter Haven addresses this tidbit [here](Beginner’s Guide to Glossary of Terms on Straight Dope Message Boards ):

But I find his explanation unsatisfactory.

Have you tried, you know, *reading * the MMP? :stuck_out_tongue: 'Cause it’s all answered in there.

Tried? Yes. Succeeded? No.

It just seems to ramble. Is that the point of it? Is it some kind of secular SDMB fellowship?

The whole point of the MMP is to provide a home for the people that like long rambling conversations, and keep them form disrailing more directed threads.

The gentleman that started them, Rue deDay, saw a need and filled it. Since they have continued mostly without him, it seems that there is a real need

As for how they get started without Rue at the helm, well that is handled by the MMP community in the threads themselves.

I didn’t think that was Rue’s rational for posting. I always thought he was a professional/semi-professional writer who posted to this board in that manner as a writing exercise. Of course, I could be wrong. And your explanation of the purpose of the MMP buys into the idea of secular SDMB fellowship, as I noted in my previous post. So there’s a MMP subculture at play here? The plot thickens, eh?

Yes and you’re not one of the cool kids.

Neither am I.

I was cool once. For 15 minutes. In 1991.

Waittaminute…

You’ve lurked for nine months, only to break your cherry and make your first post in this thread?

Heck, I’ve lurked for a lot longer than that. I just decided 9 months ago that I should pay for the pleasure of reading the MMP.

The Uncle Rue – Story guy were the best. But there have been a lot of really good ones.

As for why Rue started posting the MMP. Well I guess only he can answer that. However, on several occasions he has implied that he didn’t like people being told not to hijack threads. So he started the unhijackable thread. Unhijackable because it had no real topic, just an OP and a sort of challenge to others to see where they could take it.

And we talk about cooking a lot in there. Some really good recipes have been posted there.

Yeah, I remember the story guy thread. Good stuff. And the whole unhijackable thread thing makes sense.

And, you know, you could have read for free. It’s costing you $6/post at the rate your at now!

We also talk about poop, TMI, pus and puke…A LOT! This is a MMP unspoken rule.

Honestly, there seems to be a certain set of us who come back and post multiple times to this thread. We have new posters occasionally, and many have come to stay. This adds to the “Cool Kids” group. We’re not bound by rules (other than the rule, that there ARE no rules), and we greatly enjoy each other’s “company” if you will. We cheer each other on, commiserate or sympathize if one of us is having problems, and do our damndest to oogie each other out. Many of us have met in person.

Rue was a stay-at-home dad and I like to think his posts were his way of maintaining a sanity of sorts, or at least an attempt at semi-adult conversation. Or a creative outlet. The threads sort of evolved into a clubhouse kinda atmosphere, infinitely hijackable, pointless, silly, somber, whatever…

Then one day, his wife was laid off and started freelancing from home, and Rue had to accelerate his plans to become a vet’s assistant. So he wasn’t free on Monday mornings, so the rest of us take turns, and Rue makes occasional cameo appearances.

And that’s all there is to it.

And all it takes to be a cool kid is one post. Join us. Jooooiiiinnnnnn uuuuussssss.

The first rule of the MMP is You do not talk about the MMP.

The second rule of the MMP…

It’s just a place to be silly. Or serious if you want. It’s about everything and nothing. It’s just good. As Taters said, quite a few of us have met in person. It’s kinda fun to go to a city or part of the world where there are other MMPers and get to meet 'em. I’ve only met four so far, FairChatMom, Taters, Picunurse and Bumba but it is my desire to meet many more. TMI and oogieness are rampant. Joy and happiness over accomplishments as well as sorrow and commiseration over err… sad stuff abound. My ultimate goal is to give a big squishy bear hug to everybody in the MMP.

It’s a jakeily jake place. Come join us sometime. Stay and be a regular or just pop in to say howdy and post your random thoughts. I mean, would you had rather I started a thread about attending a county commission meeting or talked about it in there? It gives many of us an outlet to post our most MPSIMS without hoggin’ up all of MPSIMS.

And beleive me Swampy could fill this place up with mendacity.

The whole thread is a hijack. So if you have something that isn’t worth starting its own thread, but you just gotta say it, you know you always have that thread to go put it in.

It’s funny, because people wonder and think there are rules. There’s just this big ol’ thread where we spew our random thoughts. NO rules involved at all. It’s pretty much a free-for-all.

Back before I was familiar with all the acronyms, I thought MMP stood for Most Mundane Post. In a way, I was correct.

Sorry. If someone wants to submit a better explanation, I will be happy to amend… I take no ownership here.
