The whole absinthe production. Liquor, sugar, but it tastes like licorice. The buzz wasn’t notably different. Waste of money. For 1/4th the price I could’ve bought a pint of vodka and a bag of black licorice and then thrown the licorice away because I hate it.
Similar thing with a Sazerac. Look, licorice is overpowering. If that flavor is in the drink, it doesn’t really matter what else is in it. It’s a licorice drink, to be loved by those who love it, and resented by people like me.
Oh, Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat!
I once asked my mother why she never bought it, and IIRC she said it just wasn’t on the grocery list. It was one of the first things I bought when I moved out on my own, and quickly found out why. MHO, of course.
It grew on me. First time (as an adult), fun, interesting. Second time, interesting. Third time, not interesting.
After a while, I decided I didn’t like it, and once that switch goes in your mind, it’s over. It’s still not a disgusting smell like bad meat, but it is now an unwelcome and irritating smell. And rotten meat, everybody knows it’s bad, and everybody works to clear it up. But Durian, they put in in your refrigerator, and it’s deliberate.
Rotton meat messes with your gag reflex, but durian messes with your mind.
The first are okay as game food. And some of those soups are “okay”. None are great, but many find them to be comfort food- which is sometimes more important than just nutrition and taste.
Many eateries will allow customers to vary a simple menu, and the combinations are vast. I mean, i get mine, no onions, extra spread.
Yes, mail them to me, my wife loves them. . Agreed, the smoky peaty taste isnt for everyone, but there are more lovers than detractors.
For me, three ways left me- meh. I dont mean the few times was horrible, but I prefer one on one.
Yep, big waste of time and money on a Meh” taste- for what? Forbidden pleasures?
Was in Munich earlier this year and looked up foods not to be missed. They all mentioned Dallmayr coffee. Was hoping for something excellent like maybe ultra smooth or exceptionally bold and strong. Meh… just an average cup of coffee.
Dom Perignon champagne. We bought a bottle for New Year’s 2001- to celebrate the new millenium. It was ok. Admittedly I am not a champagne conossieur but the taste was pretty mild and not particularly lingering or memorable. Nothing wrong with it but nothing I will ever pay that kind of money for again.
Similarly, I had some at a Mediterranean restaurant once. It was rosewater and pistachio, served with cups of strong bitter Turkish coffee, and it was one of the best desserts of my life.
I’ve had Turkish delight in Turkey. It was decent enough. The problem was that every other sweet, candy and pastry we ate in that country was mind-blowingly amazing, so it kind of suffered by comparison.
I used to love them when I was younger. These days I would eat 1 or 2 if they sitting out, but I wouldn’t buy a whole bag because that’s way too makny.
