Our school (high school) does a candlelight ceremony every year, and everyone is supposed to sing a song together. Last year (I wasn’t here) they did “Good King Wenceslas,” which was not a huge hit with the kids. So they’re asking us for ideas for this year. They want a song with no religious references but something “uplifting” and “full of hope.” I was going to suggest “Let It Be” or “Silver Bells,” but was wondering if the Dope had any better suggestions. Any ideas would be appreciated!
Well, there’s this, and then there’s everything else.
I’m confused. Are we talking about the last day of school in Summer? Your examples seem to indicate a Christmas/Winter Holiday song.
Sorry, I meant the last day of school before the holidays. We have a month-long winter break in Korea.
This will do just fine,
Done in one.
“Forever Young” (the Rod Stewart one).
For those of us with no Youtube access at work, is that link to “Schools’s Out for Summer?”
“Auld Lang Syne”, “Imagine”, “Thank You For Being a Friend” (Golden Girls theme song!)
Yup
Pink Floyd ''We don’t need no education We don’t need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the … ‘’ The original was sung by a group of students - mostly, perhaps.
Thanks for the recommendations everyone! janeslogin, I’m sure the dean would be thrilled having the students all sing a song about rebelling against the system at our candlelight ceremony.
“Hey Jude”
Auld Lang Syne is a great suggestion. Including the joining hands crosswise/pumping arms bit.
A friend of mine used to sing that at primary school assembly. I mean, the whole school sang it, not that he just sang it on his own as some sort of rebellion.
“Killing in the Name” by Rage Against the Machine?
ABBA’s “Happy New Year” might work. It’s kind of melancholy but has an inspiring chorus and it’s appropriate for the time of year. Beautiful harmonies.
“I Have A Dream” has also become something of an unofficial Christmas song in the UK, I guess because it was originally a hit at that time of year. Also the band Westlife had a Christmas-time hit with their cover. It’s not really religious but the ‘I believe in angels’ line might be a problem.
“All You Need is Love” (great sing-along)
I clicked on this thread to see if the first response would be what I thought it would. It was.
