A couple of times, I heard a great song on KCRW’s morning show (Santa Monica/Los Angeles public radio station- 89.9).
A woman singing “we got it wrong…wrong…wrong…we got it back…wards”.
I’ve checked the playlist on their website, and can’t figure out which song it is.
I heard it back in early October.
Help! What is this song? A buddy of mine said he thought it was some British singer.
By the way, Nick Harcourt’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” is the best radio show ever.
If you live in L.A., you must try it.
Hell, it’s where David Chase found the theme song to “The Sopranos”.
FYI, Nich Harcourt gets all his “finds” from listening to Seattle’s KEXP (he admitted as much privately to one of the DJs). So cut out the middle man; KEXP streams live for free from kexp.org.
It’s Nic btw. I’ve known about him since he was at WDST in Woodstock, NY. I never lived there but he liked Happy Rhodes and so got mentioned a lot on her mailing list. She’s thanked him on a couple of her albums, and he put her on a compilation called “Alternative Woodstock.” I know he used to play her music on MBE (Cameron Crowe said he heard Happy on there and loved her) but since she hasn’t put out an album in 8 years Nic hasn’t played her recently. He’s a cool guy with great taste in music.
No one at KEXP has ever even heard of Happy Rhodes.
Do you go out to live shows in L.A., local independent artists?
If so, chances are we’ve actually hung out togeter and not known it.
The entire reason I discovered Nic Harcourt was because he was playing my own personal friends. A few of my friends havv played KCRW sponsored events. My best friend in L.A. is actually one of Nic’s favorite songwriters- and, no, Nic did not discover him on KEXP.
Hmm. Well, it was in a private conversation I had when I worked at KEXP, so I’m not sure I can name names; he’d have mentioned it on the air himself if he wanted it public. In any case, if you listen to KEXP and MBE enough, you will notice that quite frequently Nic’s discoveries already sound familiar to you from having heard them on KEXP. Nothing against Nic; we all gotta hear it somewhere first. And it’s not like he can go overboard mentioning the “competition” on the air.
Actually they have; they have three discs in their library. There’s only one person who played her, though, and she got fired when I did, in the Great Shake-up of 2004.
