songs and bands that have the same name

When I was at the record store recently, I noticed Mad Season written on one of those little cards that says the name of the artist. I did a double-take, because Mad Season is the name of a song and album by Matchbox 20. So, what other songs are also the name of a band, other than the band that does the song? (There wouldn’t be a band that names a song after itself, would there?)

The Rolling Stones.

Big Country.

Way back in the eighties there was a band called Talk Talk that had a song called Talk Talk. IIRC the name of the album was …Talk Talk.
Guess they ran out of ideas.

There’s a current Toronto band called National Anthem who opened their debut album with the song “National Anthem” (“Na Na, ooh ooh, na na, ooh ooh, na na National Anthem!”)

Bah. Now I’m going to have to wait for the band Bad Link to release their hit single “Bad Link.”

OK – how about this one from the nineteen sixties?

When “Duke of Earl” was released by Gene Chandler it was credited to “The Duke Of Earl” on the record.

Mad Season was a temporary collaboration between musicians originally from other bands - such as guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and late singer of Alice In Chains, Layne Staley.

Speaking of Alice In Chains, there’s a song on their album “Dirt” called “God Smack”. Recently I have seen ads for a band calling themselves Godsmack. Haven’t heard anything of them though.

Toy Matinee

Weezer: “Buddy Holly”

I’ll wager that there are some newer bands that have named themselves after a classic song. “Woolly Bully” or something.

Are we talking about songs named after the band who sings them, or songs named after a completely different band?

Here’s my collection of “eponymous” songs:

Sodom “Sodomy and Lust”

The list is out of date so I might have missed a few…

As for songs named after other bands, I don’t keep track, so these are just off the top of my head:

Iron Maiden “Fates Warning”
Motorhead “Ramones”
Neil Diamond “America”

All that, and you missed Deicide? Tsk, tsk…

Yellow Balloon “Yellow Balloon” It was a minor hit single in the 60s. The B side of the record was “Noolab Wolley,” giving them extra points.

Bo Diddley “Bo Diddley” – his first hit single.

Pentangle “Pentangling” – close enough, since they were just verbing their name (even though it weirds language).

Utah Saints! U-U-U-Utah Saints!

Godsmack is from my hometown. They claim not to have named themselves after the Alice in Chains song, but I find that pretty hard to believe. They were playing AIC covers before they started writing their own stuff.

Green Day

I seem to remember an 80’s era band called Art in America. They had a song called “Art in America” from the album “Art in America.”

That Talk Talk song is in a current Cingular Wireless ad. Makes me happy:D

They Might Be Giants: “They Might Be Giants” and “Hi, We’re The Replacements”

Imperial Teen: “Imperial Teen”

Living In A Box: “Living In A Box”

Shonen Knife did a song called “Redd Kross”, iirc.

And, if we really want to stretch, it seems like every other song that The Reverend Horton Heat has is about their bass player, Jimbo – “Jimbo”, “You’ve Got a Friend in Jimbo”… of course, when your bass player is the Michael Landon of Rock & Roll, you gotta give him props like that.

Ah yes, Godsmack. Or as I often refer to them, “that Alice cover band that managed to hit it big.” They have built an entire career out of sounding like Alice in Chains, only without as much talent.

Mad Season was cool, though.

Add “Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson.
