Songs for trans people

She’d rather be a “Boy Dontcha Know” by Joan Osborne is a song about a trans person’s need to transition. It’s the only one that comes to my mind offhand. Osborne’s use of the wrong pronoun for a trans man is cringe, but at least the message is supportive. It’s a start.

This thread is intended to keep the thread about bisexual and pansexual songs from being hijacked by a different topic. Just so we’re all on the same page of music, be aware that gender identity and sexual orientation vary independently of each other. Anyone of any gender can have any sexual orientation at all and vice versa.

By the title of this thread, I meant to be clear that it’s about songs for trans people and not against them.

In the Broadway adaptation of Some Like in Hot, Daphne (originally Jerry) sings this “eleven o’clock number” about embracing her true identity:

Miranda by Frank Turner

My father is called Miranda these days
She’s a proud transgender woman
And my resentment has started to fade
Because it was never about who she was
Just the way that he behaved
And now my father is Miranda and we’re ok

Young Lion by Sade (song to her trans son)

Germ by Kate Nash (rebranding TERF as GERM - Girl, Exclusionary, Reactionary, Misogynist)

An explanation…

This says songs “for” trans people, not specifically “about” trans people. And I know I’m giving the song a different meaning than it’s intended. But, I have related to this song since the 1980s. (and I’m not trans),

A Man I’ll Never Be by Boston.

Some lyrics. (Is this too much lyrics?)

If I said what’s on my mind
You’d turn and walk away…

You look up at me
And somewhere in your mind, you see
A man I’ll never be…

I can’t get any stronger
And I can’t climb any higher
You’ll never know just how hard I’ve tried

Cry a little longer
And hold a little tighter
Emotions can’t be satisfied…

A man I’ll never be

It’s a little hard to know how to judge this as Will Wood’s whole deal seems to change depending on his current state of mind and bipolar disorder (AFAIK he says he’s cis het these days), but nonetheless, here’s *I/Me/Myself:

For some reason I find myself
Lost in what you think of me
And too confused to choose who I should be
And now you’ve got me thinking
I wish I could be a girl, and that way
You’d wish I could be your girlfriend, boyfriend
Am I pretty enough to lie to
I wish I could be a girl, and that way
You’d wish I could be your girlfriend, boyfriend
Just little old me in a big, big world
Little old me in a big world
I wish I were a girl

Even if they don’t subscribe to the fan theory that Disney’s Mulan is male-identifying, this song still resonates with many trans people’s experience:

I’m Not The Girl I Used to Be - Chumbawamba. … I know where the exit is, I’ll see myself out.

We are angels, and we’re struggling to be human. Song written and performed by Rev. Yolanda.

Does it have to have lyrics? A Mother of a Revolution sparked some controversy last year when a high school orchestra was scheduled to play it, but the school board overruled them.

My sister introduced me to this song about the trans experience.

There’s nothing wrong with you; it’s true, it’s true
There’s something wrong with the village, with the village

Thanks for the contributions, everybody! I’m especially glad to learn of Kate Nash and the strong stand she took.

I’m surprised Lola by The Kinks hasn’t come up. I guess it isn’t “for” anyone…it’s “about” someone.

I always thought it was a pretty clever and early song about trans acceptance.

I worded the OP extra carefully because in the other thread somebody tried to idiosyncratically claim that transgender and pansexual are synonyms, while posting transphobic songs.
