I heard Petula Clark’s “Downtown” on the radio today, with the beginning line of:
When you’re alone and life is making you lonely…
Clever idea, because being alone isn’t always lonely.
Later Otis Redding’s “Dock of the Bay” went through my head:
And this loneliness won’t leave me alone.
Again, a clever line with the same idea.
So what other lyrics can be added? Lonely and alone in the * same* line, please
Harry Chapin’s *A Better Place to Be* has the line, “We both know all about lonliness, and livin’ all alone.”
How To Fight Lonliness by Wilco
How to fight lonliness
Just smile all the time
Shine your teeth til meaningless
And sharpen them with lies.
Yes they’re sharing a drink that’s called loneliness
But it’s better than drinking alone
Piano Man by Billy Joel
Cream , “Passing the Time”
*She sits by the fireside,
The room is so warm.
There’s ice on the window,
She’s lonely alone. *
Does “Ronery” count?
(from the Team America soundtrack)
Only if “Arone” is somewhere nearby.
1990: The Origin’s Lonely Place Alone . The chorus goes: I’m in a lonely place alone …

Same line? That’s nothing! How about the same word?
Semisonic’s Secret Smile :
When you are flying around and around the world
And I’m lying alonely
Just for the record, it’s “Loneliness.”
Close but no cigar? "One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do…’ Three Dog Night and Harry Nilsson (sp?).
I’m So Ronery
I’m so ronery
So ronery
So ronery and sadry arone *
I thought that the Police’s So Lonely would count but it turns out that Sting’s just singing “so lonely” over and over and over and over again…
How about Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi?
Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
Alone, lonely time
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much…

Low, I feel low
I feel low
I feel low
I feel so lonely
I feel so lonely
I feel so lonely, lonely, lonely, lone
Lonely, lone
I feel so alone, yeah
So lonely…

I heard this one over the weekend and came in to post it.
it’s actually
“I won’t be alone
But you know that don’t mean I’m not lonely”
because he’s with someone else but dreaming of the woman he’s singing to.
“I may be lonely, but I’m never alone” from Alice Cooper’s “I Never Cry.”

Misty Morning, Albert Bridge - The Pogues
I awoke alone and lonely
In a faraway place
And then one I am a little embarrassed to remember:
You Could Have Been With Me - Sheen Easton
You could have been with me
Instead of alone and lonely
Funny. It sounds almost like an answer to the Pogues song. (Except of course that the Easton song came first.)
One more from Aztec Camera back in the '80s.
They’re calling all the shots, they’ll call and say they phoned,
They’ll call us lonely when we’re really just alone.
