Show tunes. ANY show tunes. Though I’m partial to “(One) Singular Sensation” from A Chorus Line, and “All That Jazz” from Chicago, and selections from “Phantom of the Opera”.
“Copacabana” by Barry Manilow.
“My Man” by Barbra Streisand.
And don’t tell anyone, but when I’m alone in the car at Christmas time - Christmas carols. Some of them, anyway “Walking In A Winter Wonderland”, “Mary’s Boy Child”, “Santa Baby”.
I’m sorry I can’t think of any more current songs, the content of my CDs reveals I’m stuck in the past!
“'Cause I’m freeeeeeee…free fallin…” is a favorite of mine. Also, several 90’s alternative and grunge songs are common for me, especially “Give It Away,” just about anything off of Ten by Pearl Jam, “Spoonman.”
A local station played “Blow Up The Outside World” by Soundgarden, this was years back. When I got to the end, where Chris Cornell and I were just chanting the title of the song for a while, I looked up to see that next to me was a carful of nuns, giving me a very strange look.
It’s also nice that my wife and I actually harmonize fairly well, despite the fact that I can’t sing. We do a good job with “Hunger Strike,” she takes Chris Cornell’s parts.
Tom Petty, “Runnin’ Down a Dream”
Grand Funk Railroad, “I’m Your Captain”
Kitchens of Distinction, “Drive That Fast”
Sisters of Mercy, “Lucretia My Reflection” (extended 8 min version)
Cult, “She Sells Sanctuary” (also 8 min extended version)
U2, “Where the Streets Have No Name”
Boston songs are great but I have to make doubly sure the windows are rolled up and there are no passengers present, they’re REALLY hard to sing well and singing is not one of my strengths at the best of times.
Some good ones have already been mentioned – Don’t Stop Believing, Living on a Prayer, You Shook Me All Night Long, stuff by Trooper (I’d go with The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car, myself).
I’d add:
Jungle Love & The Joker – Steve Miller Band
Centerfold – J. Geils Band
The number one song I cannot fail to sing (and talk) along with when driving (although I don’t really “belt it out”): “Foux Da Fa Fa” by Flight of the Conchords
All Ke$ha songs. I’m constantly flipping through my preset stations to make sure I’m not missing a Ke$ha song. On long trips, I make sure to bring her CDs along, especially if I’m traveling through an area with no good stations (i.e., any rural area).
The Analog Kid - Rush.
Workin’ Them Angels - Rush. Blew the speakers on this one.
Inhale - Big Wreck.
Acrobat - U2.
The Great Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd.
4:33 AM (Running Shoes) - Roger Waters.
“Otherside” - Red Hot Chili Peppers. preferably at the top of my fucking lungs.
“Stay” by BicRunga.
“American Pie”
“Hey Soul Sister” by Train
“No Heaven” by Champion
“Dead Man’s Party” by Oingo Boingo
“Somebody Like You” by Keith Urban
“Driver’s Seat” by Sniff’N The Tears (My buddy & I love to GEEK OUT to this one)
“Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” by Elton John
“Do 'Ya” “Sweet Talking Woman” “Turn To Stone” “Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO
“My Love” by Pet Clark
“Lollipop” by Mika (my wife & I do this one together)
“Since You Been Gone” by Rainbow
“Paradise By The Dashboard Light” by Meatloaf
“Go West” by Pet Shop Boys
“Let My Love Open The Door” by Pete Townsend
“Rubberband Man” by the Spinners
and of course,
“Major Tom” by Peter Schilling (in English)
