“The Have Nots” by X. Also Blue Spark, Adult Books, How I learned mY Lesson. . . I’ma little obsessed with X this week.
“The Weeping Song” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Among others. Also obsessed currently with Nick Cave.
“Message to you Rudy”-- Specials
“Ice Cold Ice”-- Husker Du.
A bit old school this week.
I recently downloaded Johnny Cash’s **At Folsom Prison ** album after watching Walk the Line, so now I’m digging *Folsom Prison Blues * and Cocaine Blues.
I also have Ray Charles’ *America the Beautiful * rattling around my head because I got to the end of the playlist on my iPod the other day and that was the last song. I listened to it a few times in a row. Damn, that’s a beautiful song.
My personal top 10.

“King of the Bongo” -Robbie Williams (It’s a Manu Chao cover song and it’s a rump shaker).
“Drop of Poison” -Tom Waits (Off of his upcoming “Orphans” Trilogy albums which are quite awesome)
“I Need More Love”-Robert Randolph & the Family Band (Amazing funk bass line)
“Sticky Fingers” -Strays Don’t Sleep (Mellow song with a meditative phrasing…for some reason, when I bought this album off of iTunes they labelled this as “Spirit Fingers”)
“A Chance Counsel”- Richard Buckner (I’ve listened to this song higher than I can count with my shoes off and I still have no idea what it’s about. The drums are too intoxicating to let my mind walk a straight line down the lyrics)
“Hey Ya”- **Obadiah Parker ** (Yup, it’s an Outkast cover and a good one at that. Check out the video at youtube.)
“David”- Nellie McKay (“Mister Bushie says/ ‘I’m your president/ I have lots to say’/ Hey hey hey/ And click goes the remote/ There you have my vote/ Catchin’ the next boat out of here”)
“I’m Bored”- Bonzo Dog Band
“Help the Residents” -Imani Coppola (“You can put two asses in the nation/ assassination…”)
I haven’t been listening to anything but audiobooks lately, but my daughter is going to make me a tape (yes, a cassette tape!) when I have chosen enough songs to fill it. So far, I have only three songs in mind:
Love Is Alive - Gary Wright
Captain Jack - Billy Joel
One Night in Bangkok - Murray Head
I’ve never heard of most of the artists in this thread, let alone the songs!
This past week I’ve listened to only 3 albums nonstop: Park’s “Building a better ____” album, and the “Dreamboat Annie” album by Heart. The former because I can’t get it out of my head, the latter because while I had it on tape, I just got it on CD.
And I made a mix CD that starts full of earnest piano rock, but I play it in the middle in a section full of fun pop punk:
Suture Self - The Loved Ones
Talk of the Town - Riddlin’ Kids
Blame it on the Drugs - As Fast As
Red Paint - Promise Ring (okay, not pop, but freakin’ catchy.)
Can She Excuse My Wrongs - Sting
Call Me When You’re Sober - Evanescence
That’s a fun song to play isn’t it? I’m really digging “Take it off” by The Donnas because of Guitar Hero. I’m also into the new Iron Maiden “Different World”. Other then that I switch too much.
currently perseverating over:
Head Like a Kite “Noisy At The Circus” (download here)
The Killing Moon “Subject A” (listen here)
Placebo “Post Blue”
The Raconteurs “Steady, As She Goes” Jack White and Brendan Benson, what’s not to love?
Sugarcult “Pretty Girl (The Way)”
Omnisoul “Not Giving Up” (listen here)
Faster Tiger “Krakatoa”
Material Issue “Valerie Loves Me”
Epic Hero “Stars” (listen here)
Cartel “Settle Down” (the band is AKA Cedars, which I didn’t know until just now despite having a Cedars song on my Hard Drive)
“It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere” - Alan Jackson (I just can’t get tired of that song)
“Satisfaction” - Benny Benassi (Guys have gotta see the video)
“Du Hast” - Rammstein (I like the metal/dance/electronica sound)
The past couple of days have been …
“Goodbye” Kevin Shields
“Barbarossa” Cubanate
“Ride a White Horse” Goldfrapp
“Pure” Lightning Seeds
“Suffer” Echoing Green
Get Myself Into It- The Rapture
Turn It Again - The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Wolf Like Me - TV On The Radio
Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Face The Promise - Bob Seger
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elton John - since reading the recent thread about the song here.
Nobody’s Baby Now Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - I was singing this song to myself all day at work today.
Radar Love Golden Earring
Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home Pink Floyd
Lately, on my Myfi playlist…
Haunted (When the Minutes Drag) by Love & Rockets (one of the few 80’s bands IMHO who get better with a little age- mine not theirs)
and revisiting Nellie the Elephant cover by The Toy Dolls (my favorite dog is named after this song by my ex-drummer/boyfriend) bringing alot of memories back and it totally IS my dog Nellie’s soul in every possible way (except she’s a border collie and not an elephant).
Johnny & June’s Jackson is something I will never , ever get tired of and recently I’ve been loving me some Morrissey Suedehead again.
Yes, I’m a lame ass loser :)… I’m constantly being made fun of for not liking anyone “new”… although I do like The White Stripes *Take, Take, Take *
God Speaks of Marty Robbins, on the new Who album. Just Pete singing and playing acoustic guitar. Beautiful.
On a quick count I have never even heard of 90% of the songs here- let alone heard them. <slinks back into the night>
That song was in my head for a solid week. I finally rid myself of it. Then someone played me Ted Leo’s cover of Since U Been Gone, whose bridge is the chorus from Maps. For a few weeks after that, all I could hear in my head was Ted Leo singing the chorus from Maps.
Anyway.
The Hypothesist - Novillero. If indie pop sold albums, this song would have been #1 on TRL since last June. Wow, is this bugger catchy. I just found this little band by accident, caught their show by accident, and am now accidentally in love with this song. If you have the stomach for pages that autolaunch music, it’s available to listen to on the band’s MySpace page.
Rock and Roll Rhythm - Fancey. This man is one of The New Pornographers. I happened to get my hands on his setlist from their last show, which made me check out his solo stuff. And this song just enchanted me. It’s free to download from the What Are Records? website.
“Your Hand in Mine” - Explosions in the Sky
A nice, melodic postrock song. A wonderful tune.
“Sleep: Murray Ostril ‘They Don’t Sleep Anymore on the Beach’, Monheim, Broken Windows/Locks of Love” - Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Sorry, but that’s actually the title. (It’s a 20 minute song broken into three parts.) A song that puts you to sleep, in a good way. If ever there was an orchestral, high-octane lullaby, this would be it.
“Hypnotize” - The White Stripes
Because I’m a sucker for the standard rock form done well.
“This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I’m On This Song” - System of a Down
The lyrics aren’t much to speak of, but the song gets in your head.
“This Love” - Pantera
A great metal song that makes you want to “throw the horns,” crack a smile, and headbang. I challenge you to walk down the street listening to this song and keep a straight face.
“Last Living Souls” - Gorillaz
A fun little hip-hop/electronica ditty. (I don’t even know the genre.)
“Nothing Better” - The Postal Service
The best guy/girl duet song to come along in a while that I’ve seen. Cute and fun.
“El Scorcho” - Weezer
Dude falls for a half-Japanese cellist. What’s not to love?
“Fearless” - The Bravery
Yeah, I know.
“Do You Want To” - Franz Ferdinand
Cocky and over the top. But still the best song I know for getting ready to go out. (Better even than the band’s “Take Me Out.”)
“Swallowed In The Sea” - Coldplay
Coldplay at its best. Whether you like it or not.
And finally, the first three tracks from The Killers new album. - “Sam’s Town,” “Enterlude.” and “When You Were Young”
Don’t worry. Lots of folks (myself included) often don’t like to list well-known bands/songs because we want to be considered “cultured.”
And looking back at my own list, I see that I listed two bands at the outset that almost nobody’s heard of, followed by ten bands that are relatively famous, and even then, I picked some of their more obscure songs. I only listed a song that’s gotten lots of play on the radio as quite literally my final song - “When You Were Young.” It seems I am a hypocrite. :dubious:
For penance, I must confess that I also have enjoyed recently:
“Toxicity” - System of a Down
“Welcome to the Jungle” - Guns and Roses
“Higher” - Creed
“Good Vibrations” - The Beach Boys
Of course, I’m obviously not pointing the accusatory snobbery finger at anyone else in this thread. There seriously are some great obscure bands out there. It’s fun to discover them.
Red Rain, Peter Gabriel
So was one of my favorite albums as a kid - Sledgehammer was my favorite song - and I hadn’t heard this one in years. I actually did hear In Your Eyes on the radio the other day, but every so often I’d hear Red Rain in my mind. Today, at a very emotional point in my day, I actually heard it. What a moving, majestic song. I already had my last-ever trip to Tower Records scheduled for tonight, so I immediately decided to grab So, which opens with Red Rain. Like Paul Simon’s Graceland, this is one of those albums from my youth that I have almost memorized. Hearing it for the first time in more than a decade was a very cool thing.
Hey Bulldog, The Beatles
A week or two ago, I pulled out the Yellow Submarine soundtrack for the first time in a few years. I already liked this song a lot, but I am totally incapable of tiring of it. The verses are fun and bouncy, and that paranoid chorus with the combination of a surf guitar riff and the James Bond theme is just over the top. It’s a throwaway song, I guess, but it’s one of my favorite Beatles songs nonetheless.
