Sonic Toothbrush... any good?

I saw an infomercial for the Cybersonic dental care system (www.sonictoothbrush.com). It looks like a good deal, and I was thinking about getting it. However, I’m wary of buying anything from an infomercial, so naturally I must investigate first.

Has anyone used this or another brand of “sonic” toothbrushes? Does it really work? Is it a waste of money?

Apparently it works by vibrating the plaque and debris off of your teeth, giving a better cleaning than brushing.

My dentist told me to get a Sonicare toothbrush. I haven’t yet, because it’s about $100, but my fiance’s parents use one, and they love it. Why don’t you ask your dentist? And I’d be wary of the infomercial, too – I’d go with the better-known brand.

Consumer Report did a study that included (as I recall) the Interplac, Braun, and the Sonicare toothbrushes. The best at removing plaque was the Interplac. The Sonicare was the worst. I don’t think the Sonicare is the same as the one in the infomercial though.

I haven’t heard of the Cybersonic before, so I can’t tell you about that one specifically.

I’m a big fan of the Sonicare, though. I’ve been using mine for about 2 years now, and my gum health has improved tons. And not a single new cavity in that whole time.

The best thing for me is that the Sonicare has a 2-minute timer, so I know I’m brushing for long enough.

See http://www.consumerreports.org/Categories/Personal/Reports/9808bsh0.htm for the Consumer Reports article. (I’m not positive that nonmembers can access that page, but give it a shot.)
