Sopranos 2006/3/19 (beware the spoilers)

David Chase has been adamant in saying that Furio is not going to return.

I was surprised that the family members were standing around in street clothes while that wound was exposed. Given the possibility of infection, I would have thought everyone in the room would be in scrubs and wearing face masks.

I guess we just had different ideas of what ‘incapacitated’ meant ;).

Great episode. I watched it again tonight on HBO2 to catch all the dialogue. (The second time, I turn on closed captioning.) I had some nitpicks, tho’. The hospital, when the wound is open and they are talking about sepsis. Sorry, they would clear the room to change the dressings – no family members. My mother had sepsis and any time they did any procedure on her in the ICU, even changing an IV line, it was “out you go” because of the potential for more infection. His system is seriously compromised, and no way would they let a family member stay and watch that and possibly introduce more infection. Not that I’d want to.

AJ’s talk about killing Uncle Junior is bravado at this point. They’ve set him up as a borderline sociopath, but without the skills to do anything. The self-absorption of the boy was so evident in this episode. One minute talking about the Prius, the next, ranting about how great the Mustang is? Hello, sonny, your dad is dying. I agree with those who don’t think he’ll live out the season.

The dream sequence was a little annoying. Did everyone catch how in the coma-dream Tony was a military defense contractor? Hmmmm. And the woman looked a lot like the ex-GF who killed herself a couple of seasons ago – the Mercedes Benz dealer (can’t remember her name). He felt guilty about perhaps being a cause for her suicide, remember? I’m still thinking about what that all means.

I was pretty bored by most of the show. Edie Falco got to emote all over the place and Tony had yet another dream.

That was the masareti Chris was driving.

How is AJ going to put a bullet in “that fucking mummy head” while Junior is in jail? (my favorite line of the show)

I too think the voice on the phone of the dream wife was the old girlfriend that killed herself. Nothing in the credits. The dream daughter was all peppy and different than Meadow ever was. Tony’s life as it would have been if he were a civilian.

I wasn’t thrilled with this episode but suspect a lot of it will become important later down the road.

The ex-girlfriend who killed herself was Gloria.

I doubt A.J. could pull off killing Junior but it would make for great television. I don’t think A.J. has a clue about mob hierarchy and how made guys aren’t supposed to be whacked.

Stop saying this. Made guys get whacked.

They get whacked when they whack other made guys. . .which is what Junior did (regardless of what WE know, AJ thinks differently).

And, they get whacked when they snitch.

And, they get whacked for other reasons.

Moreover, made guys have already been killed in the context of The Sopranos.

You are correct, made guys do get whacked. However, unless there is a ‘war’, they get whacked only with permission. Big Pussy was a snitch. Big Pussy doesn’t get whacked without Tony’s say. Unless he was looking for trouble, even Carmine would not have whacked Big Pussy. Remember, even the boss, Tony, had to make amends when he punched Ralphie, because Ralph was from a different family. And he can’t admit that he killed Ralph (theoretically, only Tony and Chris know that Tony killed Ralph).

So, made guys can get whacked. It is just that made guys getting whacked is a big deal.

Not to mention, made guys can’t be touched by someone who isn’t made. AJ is definitely not made.

So, what’s your point? That AJ won’t do it because he understand this code?

Or is your point that if he does it, he gets re-whacked?

And if so, by who. . .some phantom mobster whose sole purpose is to defend tradition? The only people who would really care about him whacking Junior are the people who work for Tony, the guy that AJ would be avenging!!! Silvio ain’t gonna whack AJ because AJ whacked Junior.

The only guy who is close to Junior at all is Bakala, and he can’t even control Janice.

I thought my point was pretty clear. Made guys are only supposed to be whacked by other made guys (with permission from above). AJ isn’t made. Clear, right? :dubious:

Keep in mind, my mofia knowledge is all from Hollywood, but we are talking Hollywood mofia here.

If you want to go into it more, there is plenty of room for drama here. If AJ whacks Junior, it will be a problem. Phil and/or Johnny could use this against Tony. It could be used as a sign of weakness. Would anyone (probably New York) dare go after AJ? Could Phil use this to finally get back at Tony? If Tony is still in a coma, who would protect AJ? There are tons of possible story lines. This is why I watch The Sopranos.

Not quite – he was a a precision optics salesman. The conference was for military contracts, but his wife said he didn’t want to go to that conference in the first place. Why not?

Losing his briefcase, his wallet, and his “whole life,” stripped him bare. Everything that made him “Tony Soprano” was taken away, including relying on violence (of any sort) to feed his family.

I took it to be separating Tony’s authentic being from the life he was born into. We know he’s commited any number of atrocities and been complicit with many more, but we also know that he’s deeply conflicted about the life he has. He’s getting totally beat up in the conflict between his Id and his Superego, which are almost perfectly opposed.

I think one of the ideas they’re playing with is the idea of Tony being judged (possibly by himself) not for what he’s done, but who he is – as if it’s taken for granted that much of his life ran along a deterministic path because of the circumstances he was born into. Now all that is taken away, and the concern is “Who am I? Where am I going?” – not “What have I done? Where am I going?”

Others have said what I meant to say (but didn’t): made guys aren’t supposed to be killed, except with clear authorization and by another made guy.

I don’t think A.J. knows or cares about the “etiquette” of killing Junior–he probably doesn’t even realize Junior IS a mob guy.

Hey this show is Jersey not Hollywood, give us credit for a change. Many of us are proud the best Drama on TV is a Jersey Show.
BTW: Is **mofia ** a joke I missed?

Jim

AJ knows that Jr. is a mob guy and he know that Jr was the head of his Father’s family. What he knows about the Mafia though would be what we know about it, movies, news and INTERNET information. He has never been brought into the business.
In an early episode Meadow shows him a site about the 5 families and he would remember why Jr was arrested and the trial that Paralleled a real Local boss’s trial with the dementia plea.

Jim

Tony has expressed this very idea in previous seasons – pulling out of the day-to-day operations and operating from behind the scenes, limiting his direct exposure. He cited some other boss (forget who) as a model for this type of setup.

Here’s a twist (that will probably NEVER happen) *Meadow * takes over the reigns - she has the brains (even if a serious distaste for that life - but this was her *father * whom, in spite of differences of opinions, and her stint as a rebellious slut, she respects and loves.)

Help me out here-- what was Tony’s doctor saying to Carmela about “adjusting her expectations”? That Tony might have brain damage? How would sepsis lead to this? What are the chances of Tony making a complete recovery at this point? I fully admit that I might have missed something, since I’m pretty out of it with the flu. Thanks for any elucidation.

Ever have a word that doesn’t look quite right, but you can’t figure out why? :smack:
