Sopranos Season 6 - Predictions? (Possible Spoilers)

I am dying for the new season of the Sporanos to begin on March 12th. What are your predictions for the upcoming season? What follows below is the TV capsule description for the first episode:

Tony ponders an associate’s retirement request; Junior takes Tony on a backyard treasure hunt; Hesh seeks restitution for a wrong perpetrated against his son-in-law.

My only prediction is that A.J. starts to follow in his dad’s footsteps by becoming involved (at a low level) in a crew. Will any major characters be sleeping with the fishes in less than 12 episodes?

Your thoughts/guesses? (Out of respect for other posters, please use spoiler boxes for comments relating to the first episode capsule and/or any “inside” information you might have…)

No inside information but I agree with you on A.J.

I think Carmela will leave Tony.

I’m guessing Paulie Walnuts gets killed but I have no basis for this.

The feds finally make a case against Tony.

There will be no follow-up to the storyline about the Czech Special Forces guy who escaped from Christopher and Paulie. Furio will not return. Fanboys will continue to howl in outrage at the ‘dropped’ storylines.

Wishful thinking: Bobby will slap Janice across the chops. Tony, instead of burying Bobby, will promote him.

This season’s special guest star will end up dead. (See Joey Pants, Steve Buscemi).

Hey, don’t go out on such a limb, there…

Although, I have to agree with you on Janice getting slapped around by Bobby–in fact, the more I think about it, something’s gotta give…

My other thoughts Johnny Sack beats the RICO charges with ease, and at least part of the eight bonus episodes will deal with Tony’ life in the can.

MY guess is that AJ will “out” himself an tell Tony and family he is gay.

I know he’s a stupid kid, but he can’t be THAT stupid. I’m sure he knows his father’s views on homosexuality. And he must remember the close family and friends of the family that occasionally go missing permanently.

I really think that Paulie is a goner. He’s been progressively more annoying to Tony over the past few seasons. He’s also shown a little too much friendliness towards Johnny Sacks.

Also, it seems to me that with all the incomplete storylines, the show is heading towards a Seinfeld-esque conclusion.

They pretty much dealt with this. Paulie discovered that Johnny Sack had been blowing smoke up his ass about how much he and Carmine liked and respected him. Paulie ran into Carmine at a function and Carmine had no idea who Paulie was. This made Paulie recommmit himself to Tony’s leadership.

I predict that Christopher gets whacked. Tony and Silvio end up in jail. Paulie missing. And the series ends with some lowlevel Sopranos crew member (maybe that kid who was on Doogie Hauser) being in charge and the cycle continues.

This is my strongest prediction as well: i.e. the feds bring down the family and a new generation steps in to continue the endless phenomenon that is the “mafia”.

If it was a lesser show I’d be sure of this, but it has been so incredibly good at being unpredictable while remaining plausible that I’m almost tempted to believe that any prediction I come up with that feels right will most certainly be wrong.

My predictions:

Paulie will survive, because that’s what he does. After the nuclear holocaust it’ll be Paulie Walnuts fighting the cockroaches for scraps of irradiated meat.

AJ is not gay. It’s possible he’s bi, but I doubt it. We know he likes girls - he was making out with a girl on the couch when Carmella came into the room. This led to one a very true-to-life moment where AJ pulled down his shirt to try to hide the fact that he had an erection.

I think Junior will play a large role this season. This is partially a prediction, and partially wishful thinking. He’s a great character, and I neither want nor expect the writers to let him just fade out. I think he will have a sizable percentage of his marbles back and will help Tony out at a crucial juncture.

Meadow will continue to be hot and annoying simultaneously.

Carmella and Tony will actually become closer than before. Carmella will come to grips with Tony’s actions, for the most part. Tony will actually become more devoted to Carmella and his womanizing will diminish (although probably not entirely disappear). They both realize that, for better or worse, they’ve made vows to each other and have been comitted to each other for a long time. Looking into the future, Carmella sees an empty house and Tony sees hints of rats in his crew. In the end, they really only have each other.

I don’t think there will be any major conclusion to the Vito and Finn storyline. It will probably come up in some form, but it will be more subtext than major plot point.

What will happen with Chris? I have no idea. He could easily become more comitted to Tony, since he really doesn’t have anything else in his life anymore. However, he’s probably also burying some kind of deep-seated anger about the entire situation. Even if he mostly blames Adriana herself, anger isn’t always rational and he might hold some kind of unconscious grudge against Tony or Silvio. Or himself. I think his continued devotion to Tony is the most likely path, but I really don’t know.

Bobby will bitch-slap Janice. (Ok, that one is definitely wishful thinking.)

The existence of 8 “bonus” episodes makes me wonder what exactly makes them “bonus”. Why not just have a long season 6? Or a short season 7? I wonder if there is some thematic reason. Could there be some event at the end of season six that shakes things up enough to make the bonus episodes different enough to be classified as separate? If so, it will be either that Tony dies, or Tony is imprisoned, or Tony is in the Program. Of course, it’s possible they have “bonus” episodes because nobody wants to do an entire seventh season but they still want to sell another DVD.

Let me go out on a limb here.

A.J. will be killed. On purpose or on accident. This will send Tony’s marriage spinning toward the ground.

Why? Because I recall one real-life Don’s son was killed (he was jaylarking on a quad-bike) by a next-door neighbor. (“You killed who?”)

If they were going for a Season 7, we wouldn’t get it until 2008 at the earliest, even shortened. Actually, David Chase said he simply couldn’t wrap up all the threads during the season and needed more episodes. There also might be something in the actors’ contracts that bumps pay between seasons, and by calling it extended, it keeps the costs down. The Sopranos takes longer to make than hour-long TV dramas, and the actors may have committed to other projects after the end of taping (or the shows may not have yet been scripted, only story-boarded), necessitating a break in filming.

I think I posted this on a previous thread of this nature, but…
Carmella can’t split from Tony because he’s too controlling. They hinted at her getting into real estate… that’s going to be her ticket to leave him which is what she wants.
AJ is definately going to get involved in the ‘crime’ side of the family. He’s not smart enough to do anything else.
Meadow will come to understand her father’s view of things. Finn’s out of the picture except as a minor story line.
I hate to see it but the underlying theme is how being in ‘the business’ is a self destroying venture that recycles itself over and over.
Chris will become more ruthless now that he doesn’t have Adriana to keep him in check (if she ever really did)

I think Tony has to die or turn state’s evidence. Being in prison isn’t enough - we know he would have lawyers working constantly to get him out, and he could continue running his empire from inside. Death or rathood is the only logical conclusion for the series, and I would have to bet on death. I would expect the death to come out of left field, the result of some sub-plot that we have mostly forgetten.

This would be a very interesting way for the series to go.

I don’t know where the “AJ is gay” idea is coming from. That would be totally out of left field.

I don’t think Tony would turn states evidence. What about something like this, perhaps Melfi turns him in and Tony assaults/kills her?

I think they’ve established that Tony isn’t so flush with cash and power to be above doing prison time. I could easily see the series ending with Tony in prison. Maybe even stuck with some flunkie who he can barely stand as his only lackey there.

As for AJ, I think if he gets involved with a crew it will be briefly or he will actually turn the crew legit. They started to show last season that AJ did have some sense. I could see him getting into concert promoting or like they talked about on the show “party planning”. If AJ ends up sticking with that insanely rich girl he was dating he could maintain the level of sloth and idle richness he’s enjoyed without having to turn to crime.

What happened to the case where they found the airline tickets in Tony’s car? Didn’t he get in trouble for that? It was so long ago I can’t remember. I think it was from when they busted out Dave Scatino’s outdoor store.

I think Livia’s death put the kibosh on that case. I remember Tony’s lawyer saying they had no case against him. Or one not worth the feds time.

AJ’s interest in ‘Event Planning’ is just a euphemism for him running illegal parties. Good training for setting up poker games and running a strip joint or brothel.

‘Euphemism’ isn’t quite the right word. You know what I mean.

Father-son relationships (even when the people involved aren’t father and son, like Tony & Junior or Tony & Christopher) are so important to the show that to have AJ just decide to stay legit would be a huge let-down. Kind of like if they were ever to make The Godfather Part 3 and Michael’s son wasn’t interested in the family business.
