SOTU address Tuesday 01/20/15

Let us use this thread to hammer out the drinking-game rules, and, later, to comment-while-watching.

GOP’s choice to rebut Obama’s State of the Union address: Joni Ernst. No, really.

CNN does a “reality check” on Obama’s most recent proposals, which presumably he will mention in the speech. (They’re not skeptical that the proposals would work, but that Obama has any chance of getting the Pub Congress to go along with them.)

I do wonder if the RW SCOTUS justices will boycott again.

I’ll move this to The Game Room forum for you.

Game Room? If you’re looking for a catchall-for-all-things-political forum that isn’t GD, I would have thought, Elections; or maybe IMHO.

Justice Breyer looks pale and gaunt…

You’re the one that said this would start with hammering out drinking game rules.

He wants an AUMF against ISIL/ISIS/Daesh/the performance-art collective formerly known as Daesh.

OK, sure, what could go wrong?

OK, name checked France, Putin, Cuba…

…there goes Alan Gross, drink a shot.

Oh, you did not just talk about restraining the use of drones!

I notice none of the generals applauded his call to “finish the job” of closing Gitmo. Shame on them.

Well, at least Roberts showed up.

“I know, because I won both of 'em.”

Out of the park!

“I know… I won both of them”… oh, snap.

Chug.

The repubs didn’t drink the Kool Aid. Their heads didn’t explode. I’m generally disappointed.

I like everything Obama mentions, especially the infrastructure.

ETA: Did he just bomb the republican hecklers with, “I know, 'cause I won 'em both?”

 Yep, he said “I have no more races to run…” then some heckling. And then that great reply.

Eeeh… fine and OK, but not one for the ages. Generally much of the same as what he has spoken along his campaigns and presidency and a defense of his position.

I don’t know, John looked pretty close to the edge through most of it… but maybe that’s how he always looks.
There was someone in the front row who seemed to be in good spirits. For some reason I had it in my head that it was Howard Dean, but looking at a picture I was way off base. Was it Mitt?

ETA, not Mitt, I’m not sure who it was…

ETA2, I think it was (a 10 year older) John Kerry, which makes sense. It’s the guy in the first chair to the left of the left aisle 3:10 in this video.

Joni Ernst is on.

She had only one good pair of shoes growing up.

Economy, infrastructure, equal rights, women’s rights, Internet, defense, terrorism, help for middle class… Yes, we need all this, but…

That’s why I typically don’t like ANY of the SOTUs. It’s like your first time-share meeting in Boca. Sounds great to the ears and sounds more impossible to make it work when you read about it.

. . . You didn’t even watch the speech you’re supposed to be rebutting, did you, Joni?
