It looks like December will be our best shot for a (possible) South Bend, Indiana Dopefest. The hotels should be freed up then, since ND Football will be over with.

Although I’m now an Indy Doper, I grew up in Mishawaka. I think I could get myself up there for a Dopefest, depending on the date and time.

Limerick, West Lafayette isn’t so bad. At least there’s a Ben and Jerry’s right next to the bars.

Well, ok, I’ll give you that. And the XXX Diner helps too. Why does drinking ridiculous amounts of alcohol always make me crave pancakes and bacon? However, compared to the lovely state of VA,…well, it just doesn’t compare.

However, in the hopes of reforming my piss-poor attitude about this state, I’d love to drive up and party. Won’t be in town Nov 16-18 though.

I won’t either. I’ll be in Pittsburgh. How about we shoot for the first weekend of December? After Thanksgiving, so people should be home. I have tentative plans to drive from Louisville, KY to Valparaiso to get anya marie. You’re on the way. Wanna ride in with us?

If it’s the first weekend of December I may be able to grace you all with my presence. Coming from Muncie it’s not too far.

December is a possibility. I’ll need to check my finals schedule, but I think I’m good. School is kicking my ass, and I can’t make it up for the Tennessee game (Nov. 3) or the Navy game, so it’d be nice to get up there before the end of the semester.

In the meantime, I’ll be thinking of things to do as well. Superdude, you’ve had dopefest experience, so any abstract ideas you have would be great.

Yeah, I can do that. Typically there’s dinner, along with much drinking. Then everyone retires to a hotel room, or the host’s house (if it’s that kind of DopeFest), for more drunken debauchary. P’raps I can borrow thinksnow’s Adult Jenga for the weekend. THAT should get some kind of party started. If nothing else, we’ll need alcohol, and some info on local hotels. You can normally cram 4-5 people into a hotel room…more if you have people sleeping on floors and stuff. I’ll also have to see what kind of places to eat there are up there…

[sub]Bump![/sub]

For eats, there are a lot of options, like MSK mentioned. Downtown there is Macri’s (a great little authentic Italian deli), BW-3s (trivia, beer specials, sports, darts), and CJ’s (hole-in-the-wall burger pit, cheap beer, that’s it).

Up in Mishawaka (Grape Road area), it’s take your pick. Bleacher’s might be a good idea. They have good food, darts, pool, etc. If that doesn’t look good, then there’s a Friday’s and Chili’s across the street. There’s also a Lone Star (my former employ) and Outback right there as well. Don Pablo’s is a block away. There’s another Macri’s about a mile from there, which is a bit more of a bar setting.

MSK, I know there’s also some good spots near Granger, but I haven’t ventured up there much. I think I remember you mentioning in your “shaved head experiment” thread a bar near there.

If we feel real daring, we can go all the way out to Lydick to The Hideout (Lydick is an area known for being one of John Dillinger’s hideouts). They’ve got great food, cheap drinks, and occassionally have karaoke.

I’m of course assuming that people want to stay away from the college bars. If people don’t want to avoid that, that’s another can of worms - one of which I’m more than willing to pop open (there’s nothing better than hitting on ladies born in the 80s - hey, that rhymes!).

Well, Munch, I’m all for trying to pick up some college chicks. As far as food, I’d suggest Bleacher’s, though I’ve never been there. Kinda difficult for me to spearhead the arrangements to someplace I’ve never been. Were we planning on doing this on Saturday, and having like a Mini-Dope on Friday?

That’s certainly doable. I’d get in around 9:30-10:00pm from Indy, but I’m not sure when you and your caravan would get in. Speaking of caravan, I’d certainly be willing to do that. I just can’t commit to driving anyone, since I’ll most likely stay late on Sunday to spend time with the family. I would imagine that the mini-Dope’s location would primarily depend on which hotel everyone’s staying at.

Good point, Munch. Maybe, if we get bored, we could drive into Canada and kick some ass. Let me try to get a list of hotels in the area.

Sweet! Detroit/Windsor is only 3 1/2 hours away. I’ll wear my ass-kickin’ hot pants…er…boots. I meant boots.

Some hotel info available here.

Well, Munch, it looks as though everyone is nominating you as the organizer of this event.

It doesn’t look as though anyone is all-too-thrilled with the locale of the Dopefest though, with all this talk about road trips elsewhere and such. I may be mistaken, though.

I’m up for anytime in Decemeber. I guess Bleacher’s would be an okay place to hang out. That’s not where I would pick to go, but as stated there is billards and darts there to keep people entertained.

I say let’s do this!

Yep, Munch, you’re elected.

Oh no. I say we do this Kansas City Chiefs-style - running back by committee. I’m simply throwing out some ideas. MSK, Bleacher’s was merely a suggestion. I’m all too familiar with student bars, and am fairly inexperienced with anything outside of Grape Road. I think you’d have a better handle on this area - I don’t know what people’s preferences are. And since you’re opposed to Bleachers, there’s many more options that can be considered.

Ok, so looks I’m carrying the ball, again. No problemo!

I don’t care for Bleachers Pub because, quite frankly, the typical clientel in there is, shall I say, a bit on the “trailer-park” side.

Personally, my preferred site for the Dopefest would be TGIFridays, just because the food is damn good and the female bartenders there are a hoot. However, TGIF is notoriously busy, at any given time, especially the weekends. Unfortunately, the alchohol is quite expensive there, as well. We may want to vote on this one.

I think what it all boils down to is these elements:
[li]good food[/li][li]affordable booze[/li][li]good spot for a private party[/li]
How significant should the local college crowd be in determining where we do this?

Several restaurant/bars come to mind if you want good atmosphere, good food and no college crowds:

[li]The Emporium at the East Race Very nice place, great view, great food, but kind of expensive.[/li][li]Between the Buns Awesome food, tons of booze, affordable, fun atmosphere. There are 2 of these locally, but I feel the original one is the best place. It’s a bit out of the way, but if we carpooled, there would be no worries about getting lost.[/li][li]The Hacienda @ the 100 Center Decent Mexican food, historical building, locally famous for their Margaritas, plus any other booze, reasonable prices.[/li][li]The Oaken Bucketlocally owned restaurant often voted as best having the best burgers in Michiana. I have never been there, but it’s a pretty popular place, and I doubt it is expensive.[/li]If we want to eat and socialize first, then get drunk later, Old Country Buffet on Grape Road is perfect for small or large groups. They don’t serve any booze, but there’s all you can eat for about 8.00 per person. After eating, we could go get plastered elsewhere.

I don’t personally know most of you who would be interested in coming, but my best bet is that we all would enjoy Between the Buns, the most.

I will see what other ideas I can come up with. What do you think Munch? You have been here.

GREAT suggestions! I’d have to vote out the Emporium, unless we want to drop over $30 each for food alone.

Is Between the Buns on U.S. 31, by Studebagels, across from Coach’s? That’s a great place (plus, it’s within walking distance of nearly everyplace I’ve publicly taken my pants off in the Bend).

The Oaken Bucket IS all that you’ve heard. Great burgers, and a great view of the river (better than The Emporium, IMO).

Hacienda is also a wonderful place - incredible building, great margaritas, really good food (also, it’s next to Truman’s, a gay bar with the best dancing in town).

What’re people’s thoughts at this point?

How could we NOT go to Between the Buns? Never been there , but what a name…

December sounds good - now to talk Mr. Pol into the idea…
