Southland, one of the best series on TV at the moment, just started up again on TNT. If you missed the first episode, it will be repeated this week.
Once again, this series doesn’t disappoint. This show moves so quickly, I usually think “must be about over now” and then realize it is still the first 15 minutes! They added Lucy Liu as a new character this season and she fits right in. Great start to a great series!
I really like this show. In some ways it’s just another cop show, but i like the characters and the situations, and the location shooting is also great.
I agree that Lucy Lui’s character adds something to the show, and i also really liked Lou Diamond Phillips as the asshole cop. The scenes in the last five minutes or so were pretty intense.
I saw my first episode ever, yesterday.
It looks like a great show. How did I miss this? If it weren’t for the Golden Globe awards I still wouldn’t know about it.
What season was yesterday’s premiere? (OK, I’m saw it yesterday from my DVR, not sure when the premiere actually aired)
It actually started on NBC in 2009, but they dumped it after 7 episodes. TNT picked it up, running a short Season 2 (6 eps) of episodes that were originally intended to be part of Season 1. Least year’s Season 3 had 10 episodes, and that is the plan for Season 4 as well.
You really should go back and watch the earlier seasons. Ben and Coop were great together, and there were some really good episodes. You’ll also get backstory that will make it easier to understand some of the jokes, the comments, and the ways that the characters relate to one another.
So…did anyone else find Lydia’s comment about guessing the CI finally got to see the ocean incredibly cold? In my house we debated whether or not she meant it that way.
I had DVR’ed it and watched it last night. As good as ever if not more so. I love this show, especially by comparison with Law and Order and Dragnet and any other “cleaned up” shows about cops in their daily activities.
Sounded more resigned and despondent than cold to me.
No-one who’s watched the whole of this show could accuse her of being cold, i don’t think. If anything, she invests far more emotion in the job than many of her colleagues, and it often seems that she worries too much about things she can’t control and people she can’t help.
I thought that the worst part of the line was how obvious it was. As soon as they found the body at the beach, i knew that either Lydia or her partner were going to say exactly that.
Another good episode, although not quite as good as last week’s, IMO.
Ben’s clocking of the girl in the parking lot is reminiscent of a recent incident that we discussed on this board, where a cop (in Seattle, i think?) whacked a woman who got violent with him after being stopped for jaywalking or some similar offense. It did, indeed, get lots of internet play.
Son of a bitch. Yet another series that I was oblivious too until today. I was setting up the DVR to record Justified tonight and noticed Southland right below it on TNT. Three hours later, I’m caught up on this season and hooked, but missed the three previous seasons.
Season 1 is available on Netflix (disc only; no streaming) and iTunes (streaming). I believe that Season 2 is out on DVD, and is also available streaming on Amazon.
My wife isn’t a fan of cop shows, but watched Episode 1 of Season 4 and became hooked. We’re now watching Season 1 so she can catch up.
Glad to see a few more people watching this excellent show.
I read that Lucy Liu is scheduled to be in a new TV series next season, so wondering if this bodes badly for her character on this show. Maybe they will just transfer her to a new unit in a different part of town (in case the new show isn’t a hit and she can return) or maybe she will go out in a blaze of glory?
I was surprised to see Lucy Liu in the series. She has had box office success, and most actors who are big in movies don’t do TV. Then again, I haven’t heard of any recent movies that she’s been in, so this probably looked like a good opportunity to her. Whatever pays the rent, right?
I think our library has copies of the series DVDs, but I’m sure the waiting list is long. There were nearly 300 holds on the first two seasons of Justified and I’m still waiting on them after a month.
