I loved Simmons’ portrayal in both movies. But does anyone else have a problem seeing Simmons’ J.J. giving the “five million readers worth of power” speech to Ben Urich?
The original Hobgoblin was Ned Leeds.
Harry Osborne becomes the second Green Goblin. Different character.
They set us up for three possible villains in the next film:
-
**Green Goblin II **. (Note to Raimi: If you go this route, please lose the crappy metallic mask.)
-
The Lizard. This would make for some good action. It gets my vote.
-
Man-Wolf. (Jameson’s son.) Please don’t. Never liked this character.
Actually, my real choice would be Sandman. One of my favorite Spidey villains, and a fun, wisecracking character. Would allow for some good Spidey-Sandy repartee. Doesn’t look like that’s the road they’re taking, though.
The girl with the cake I didn’t recognize from the comics. I suppose she also might turn out to be a potential villain. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, you know…
I was almost certain the GG/HG would be the villian for Spiderman 2. The way the first movie ended with Harry furious at Spidey over his father’s death seemed to make it pretty clear to me. As to the coolness factor of the fights, it seems to me that arial combat may be much more feasible now that Spidey has learned to throw web-punches and use his leaping skills. If you want cool fights then having the Lizard be the next villian would be top choice. The angst of the “former best friend turned supervillian and he knows your secret” would be the focus if Harry takes up the mask/glider. Cool action could be supplied mostly through fighting non-superpowered villians or natural disasters(fire, plane/helicopter crash, etc).
Anyway, I’ve been really, really pleased with the way they have produced these two films and I feel it is by far the best transition of comic book -> movie in recent years. I’m actually looking forward to the next film and I hope they have the balls to show some of Peter and MJ’s discord over the costs his alter-ego incurrs on their relationship.
Enjoy,
Steven
I think the choice of villain needs to be based on two things: how cool a fight can you have, and how good a character is it. In both ways, Doc Ock blows Green Goblin out of the water. He’s far more tragic (and therefore interesting), and the arms make for a much cooler set of options.
We had none of Eddie Brock (aside from the brief JJJ mention of his “society photographer”) in this movie, so we didn’t have much chance to set up the character. Then again, Otto Octavius was brand new, so foreshadowing is not required. I think the ending sequence with Harry means he’s very likely to be the villain in the next one, but I’d rather see someone else: Sandman. Imagine the fights! Sandman turning into a sandstorm or flowing away from a punch, only to turn rock-hard and come right back at poor Pete.
Oh, and has anyone yet clocked the screen time to determine if Spider-Man spends more time with his mask off or on? I think it’s close…

Ex-cuuuuse me, but you are sadly mistaken. Ned Leeds, as anyone knows, was only brainwashed into posing as the Hobgoblin by the REAL Hobgoblin, Roderick Kingsley, the evil fashion designer, who was exposed by Betty Brant, Ned’s widow.
Ned Leeds indeed…

Well, if we want cool visuals, then the next Spidey villian should be someone who can give us fast-paced, high-leaping combat and mid-air Spidey-tussles.
Frogman, anyone?
Then all we have to do is get Spider-boy to rediscover Doc Ock’s arms at the botom of the river, and have the Toad cross over from the X movies.
Remember the Misfits, anyone?
The All-Weiners Squad!
(I’m still pissed that they took Ollie and buffed him up into a serious character called the Steel Spider  )
Well, now you know how long it’s been since I read a Spider-Man comic.
At any rate, Harry Osborne is NOT the Hobgoblin, which was my essential point.
Now do you have a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 I could flip through? Wait, let me put down this chicken wing…
It will be Lizard and MORBIUS the living vampire. Ties in perfectly with both the comics and the cartoon TV series.
You saw it here first folks and I will claim my “no prize”.
Morbius? Bah. Talk about one-sided villians.
Oh, wait. That’s not right.
I know nothing about the comic books, FWIW. I thought this movie was wonderful! I really admired Tobey Maguire: he has lots of close-ups and heavy-duty scenes, and he really pulled it off well. For someone who is such a sad sack much of the time, I really cared about poor Peter.
And the scene on the train had me in tears. “We won’t tell anyone.”
And it’s always good to see Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi.
Oooh, if Morbius shows up, does that mean we can have a Blade appearance? And not that white-for-no-reason-and-doesn’t-even-use-stakes Blade from the cartoon.
You know…that would make a bad-ass movie, Spider-Man & Blade: Webs of Blood!
I have heard a rumour that a scene was filmed with Dr. Connors that was supposed to be shown at the very end (after the credits) that would lead into the Lizard being the villian or one of the villians for S-M3. Haven’t been able to verify though.
Also, I believe at one point (in the comics) that Spider-Man stated he will not use his full strength on regular human foes, for fear of killing them.
“One more step, and the roaches die screaming!”
I wouldn’t mind seeing a few goofy villians in the third movie (i.e. Humbug, though with enough CG thrown at it, you could even film The Spot), with a classic like Lizard or Sandman as the heavy.
They’ve just gotta get Spidey to be more of a wise-ass.
I agree, but I don’t think he was much of a wise-ass until later on in the comics when he got a bit more comfortable in his job.
Anyway, for the villains in the third movie, why not have three? For instance, the movie opens with a quick five or ten minute fight scene with a goofy supervillain which Spidey wins fairly easily. Then the heavy being the Lizard, except the Lizard is having his strings pulled by a not-yet-ready-to-emerge from the shadows Green Goblin or maybe the Kingpin.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
If we get a short sequence with a goofball villain who gets easily defeated, can it please be Hammerhead? I love that guy. He’s a great stupid villain.
I vote for either Rocket Racer or Stiltman.
Stiltman - The all-time stupid villian.
I dunno – the Hypno-Hustler might be able to give Stiltman a run for his money.
Just another voice shouting “Harry Osborn is NOT Hobgoblin”. Changing his character to Hobgoblin just because it is different from Green Goblin isn’t a good enough reason.
