I once heard about someone in a similar situation soaking the entire thing in water, then calling the company to complain about it not working. You should be able to pop the [ key off, depending on how the keyboard is made. Then you could try cleaning the coffee out of the area. Either way, keyboards aren’t expensive to replace (unless you get yourself a cordless onee like I have).
What might help is using one of them spray-cans that technicians use to “sterilize” electrical wires before welding them. I think it contains air with a little vaporized Aqua Destilata. It usually cleans out the most. Also, placing your keyboard on a moderately warm heating radiator for a few hours has always worked for me. God knows how many beverages I have spilled over my keyboards throughout the years, and I never had to buy a new one. Alghough, as stated already, they cost almost nothing.
Hey, I just replaced my keyboard with a new cordless keyboard ( ) (also the mouse) Now I have a perfectly functional keyboard that I hate to throw away, but is completely worthless. If you want, I could ship it to you! (I’ll throw in the mouse too - I think it needs cleaning)
I do not merely dance. I bewitch. I seduce. I enchant and I bewilder. Throw money.
(Gee, Wally must have seen me dance!)
Why don’t you buy a new one? They are only ten bucks for a w95/98 one with special keys.
Otherwise, turn it over, let it dry. You can stick it in the oven if you have one with a pilot light for a few hours.
If you put sugar in your coffee, youll get stickshun.
“‘How do you know I’m mad’ said Alice.
'You must be, ’ said the Cat, ‘or you wouldn’t have come here.’”
The exact same thing happened to me a few months ago. I’m living in a dorm, all of my electrical outlets are all next to each other, so my coffee pot is by necessity right next to my computer. Anyway, I tried turning it upside down and letting it dry, and it did get a little bit better, but not nearly good enough. I ended up having to get a new one. The odds aren’t in your favor here, sadly.
Well, I borrowed my keyboard from the office, so I’m back in business, at least temporarily. Thanks for all the advice!
Keyboards are only ten bucks?!? Damn, I’ll just pick one up after work tomorrow.
I called CompUsa, and a recording said they were open normal hours today. I go there, and they are closed. Bastards.
Now I just hope I remember to bring the borrowed keyboard back to the office tomorrow.
When someone spilled soda on mine, I unscewed the back, dried the insides with a hairdryer on low, and it seemed to work fine, BUT, do not screw the back on too tightly, or you’ll be right back where you started. You may have to adjust the tightness a few times .
OK. I’ll tell you all what to do – again!
Your keyboard is pretty tough. Disconnect it. Buy a bottle of alcohol – and not those types that are green, scented or whatever – just plane alcohol.
Flush your board with it AFTER REMOVING THE COVER! Use a fine brush to GENTLY remove any dried coffee or sugar goop left. MOST of your mess will be on the top level, away from the major circuitry. (DON’T SMOKE WHEN DOING THIS AND HAVE GOOD VENTILATION!!) Use q-tips to rub out anything remaining and, if you choose, remove the keys.
Do the same IF NECESSARY to any stained parts UNDER the top of the board. (A child’s rubber ear syringe is great for this or a small baster.) Let dry in front of a fan for a couple of hours. You need to check it carefully for moisture afterwards and use an electric hair dryer set on low to evaporate anything else you find.
Put it back together. Plug it in and use it. It might even work better than before.
I’ve had to do emergency cleaning of my board several times – being a slob, plus, now and then I clean it for general purpose maintenance. It works every time.
CAREFUL! We don’t want to learn from this!(Calvin and Hobbs)
