Matthew Sweet is one of those musicians that I have been interested in learning more about but I just haven’t ever gotten around to it. I really don’t know any of his work at all, I just know him by reputation- people whose tastes I respect and/or share tend to like him.
So anyway, he’s playing at a show that I’ll be going to next month. I’d like to listen to a CD or two before actually seeing him live. Where should I start?
I think 100% Fun is his best album, but that’s IMHO.
Girlfriend is essential listening for Sweet fans - I ended up getting a greatest hits compilation that is out and it is a good overview, but real fans tell me that I am missing out on some good songs…
Get Girlfriend before 100% Fun. Altered Beast is also worth a listen. Kim Ga Suki, which was released in Japan (not sure when), is now available in the U.S. Richard Lloyd plays on it so I’m going to spring for that. My opinion is, Matthew Sweet albums where Richard Lloyd is along for the ride are good. The others suck.
