Spoontula or Spatuloon?

While cooking supper tonight, my husband told me how happy he was with the Ikea spatula we bought recently. Since it has curved edges, it works well as a serving spoon too! In a slightly ridiculous amount of joy, he declared that he loved the “Spatuloon!”

Once I’d stopped laughing at him, I told him that I was glad he liked the “Spoontula”

We then proceeded to have a 10 minute “argument” about which word was better, and he told me I ought to post it on the boards, and put it to a vote!

So, Dopers, which word do you prefer? Spoontula, or Spatuloon?

What other random items have you given crazy hybrid names to?

Whatever you call it, it sounds more useful than the KFC spork, an eating utensil which combines both spoon and fork and is designed to deposit as much food in your lap as into your mouth.

Neither, but you’re closer. It’s a “spoonula”. No “T”.

Every place I’ve ever seen that sells them calls it that, and it rolls off the tongue better than either of the other too.

Ah, but it already has a name. They are called “spoonulas”.

Spoonula!

Sorry, but I think “spatuloon” is a much better word. Baboon, pantaloon, brigadoon, contrabassoon … spatuloon. It rolls off the tongue.

I vote for ‘spatuloon’.

Spoontula is an awesome B-movie monster though.

It’s difficult to say. They both fill me with such deep horror, I can’t easily compare it.

Spinning its webs of horror in the cutlery drawer, it waits for its next meal… Spoontula!

Even the professional catering suppliers Nisbets call it a spoonula.

They don’t have sporks though.

It’s the Spoontula, named for the fictional Count Spoontula (who was modeled after the historical figure, Vlad the en-ladler).

Spatuloon! I shall henceforth call these utensils by that name, when I remember not to call them “thingies.”

I can’t help thinking a spatuloon should be inflatable and buoyant.

Similarly, I call my Swiss Army knife my knibottleopescrewstrippercorcanoreamedriver.

“Spatuloon” sounds like something that ought to be similar to a “spittoon”. :stuck_out_tongue:

Spatuloon rolls off the tongue very nicely. It has to be the winner for me.

Spoontula (or for that matter Spoonula) is awkward for me. I don’t care for it, personally.

I hear there’s a huge selection at Spoonula City

Looking at the Nisbets link, it doesn’t really look like that at all, so whatever it is, it isn’t a Spoonula as we commonly (?) know it.

It really is more like a spatula, with slightly raised edges - a little like our cat litter scoop, but without the holes to sift with.

Found it!

Apparently IKEA calls it the DIREKT wok spatula: link but that’s a stupid name.

I hope that doesn’t mean I lose…!

But then again, seeing as how he’s the cook around here, I suppose he can call it whatever he wants! I’ll continue to “argue” with him though, just because it’s fun!
