Did you mean “The last thing I want to do is be a carrier that ends up killing someone else” or did you mean “It would suck to be a carrier that ends up killing someone else but it’s not nearly as important as me going to Las Vegas”?
Fair enough. Hard to gauge what is paranoia and what is being prudent. Seems like 15 people out of millions leaves a lot of room for avoiding the virus. On the other hand, it would seem to be spreading quickly.
Thanks for the feedback. I didn’t mean the latter of what you are saying, if that weren’t clear. There is no guarantee I’ll not be a carrier here. I’m asking if traveling actually increases my probability of becoming one. I’m not sure it does, but as I said, it is difficult to really gauge that. So I asked.
If casino/resort shows are important, check to see if they’re still scheduled during your visit. I have no advice on accommodations but if you’re flexible, think of renting an RV for you and your kids. Beside Vegas, Hoover Dam, and Death Valley, consider seeing the Valley of Fire, Mt Charleston, and Oatman AZ.
I’ve got a trip booked to Key West next week. I’m still going. But, I will make a point of not visiting my nonagenarian parents until at least two symptom-free weeks after getting back home (which should make me fine for our Easter family get-together, assuming I’m actually symptom-free).
I cancelled a trip to Palo Duro. It would have been me, my mom, my sister from another state, and our kids. Part of it is rational . . . My mom is on her 70s and shouldn’t be around several kids from different states, I think. Part of it was more emotional . . . not wanting to be away from home in a tome of great uncertainty. And part of it was that I can’t remember if there’s cell phone coverage in Palo Duro and I can’t handle the stress of no news about this for several days.
That’s a shame but a reasonable decision. Love Palo Duro and was a frequent visitor when kid was a Tech student.
My wife and I have reservations at the lodge in Big Bend NP over the Easter weekend and have been keeping an eye on the web site for possible closure. I can’t see them closing the park but can possibly see the lodge shut down.
My unscientific/no reason to thing this whatsoever thought is that we’ll be on the downhill side in a month.
You should look into the data from south korea. They are testing huge swaths of their population with a vast majority coming up healthy so you don’t have the effect of mild cases being ignored. Their death rate is still hovering between 0.4 and 0.6% so about 5x of normal flu.
I cancelled. It is 1. Crowded a 2. international. And they have already closed the buffets. Honestly, I wouldn’t go now if the hookers were half price (that’s a Vegas joke, I have never hired hookers).
It’s not difficult to really gauge that at all: would you come into contact with more people if you traveled to another city or if you did not travel to another city? Would you come into contact with more people who have come into contact with more people if you traveled to another city or if you stayed locally? Do you think you will come into contact with people in Las Vegas who have been in contact with people from points unknown to a greater degree than if you stayed where you are? I mean, how many visitors from all over the world regularly come to where you live and work now?
I’m in the middle of cancelling. Rental cars and hotel cancellations were easy. Delta has said not to contact them unless you are within 72 hours of your trip because they are so overwhelmed. So I need to hold off on that. My tickets were non refundable, so I’ll eat the cost if Delta won’t refund or at least provide travel vouchers. As someone else here implied, there is a decent chance any Vegas shows will be cancelled and I’m wondering if National Parks will even be open for much longer.
Time to work from home for a while and use due diligence.
As I said, I’ve already decided to cancel, mostly because I think the things we were planning on seeing will not be available. It also gives a bit of peace of mind to not be on a plane for 5 hours or in an audience for 3.
Not sure I agree there are higher risks going somewhere else, but I see what you are saying. It is a fair consideration.
Ask yourself one question. How much time are you likely to spend in contact with someone over 60 years old after you return? If that answer is much over zero you should stay home.
If you travel and spend time in large groups you need to assume you will contract it. This thing is highly infectious and the reported number of positive tests dramatically understates the number of sick people. In Vegas, drinking and gambling and eating? You’re probably catching it, if you’re young it’ll probably be mild and you’ll be fine.
But if you come home and give it to your parents or grandparents and they die…
Good call. Given what we’ve seen in terms of cancellations & closures in the past 24-36 hrs I wouldn’t want to travel anywhere at this time for fear of there being nothing to do.
Already cancelled I see, but my biggest concern wouldn’t be the disease itself but that whatever shows you wanted to see were still running. My concert plans were cancelled, and not nearly as many cases as Clark county.
If you would have been okay with the outdoors stuff, I wouldn’t have hesitated.
Yeah, I alluded to this earlier. I don’t want to be a vector, although I’m not at all worried about what happens to me if I contract it. I wouldn’t want my kids to get sick, but I’m about as worried of it being fatal for them as I would be for something like a cold or the flu. They just aren’t high risk for that.
As for the other part of that, my plan is to stay away from anyone over 60 for at least two weeks after returning. Well, was the plan. I’ve just returned from a trip to mexico and I’m staying away from the elderly as a precaution. I wasn’t in contact with anyone who exhibited any symptoms and I wasn’t in an area that has any reported cases, but given the fatality rate of this for those over 65 I’m using due caution.
I wouldn’t have been drinking or gambling in Vegas. I would have eaten, though. That is a habit I picked up as a kid and never have been able to shake.
I now definitely recommend CANCEL the trip to Vegas. In fact, I would not even set foot in Nevada.
“Sisolak [the Governor if Nevada] signed an emergency order earlier Tuesday barring the use of anti-malaria drugs for someone who has the coronavirus. The order restricting chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine came after President Donald Trump touted the medication as a treatment and falsely stated that the Food and Drug Administration had just approved the use of chloroquine to treat patients infected with coronavirus. Sisolak said in a statement that there’s no consensus among experts or Nevada doctors that the drugs can treat people with COVID-19.”

I ended up canceling my Key West trip after all. Good thing too; they shut down all tourist attractions and eat-in restaurants and bars on what would have been my first day there! Hotel and airfare were not refundable, but both said they would give me a credit for the full amount for one year with no change fees.
