Spring Break in Vegas.. Cancel?

I have plans to take my 21 year old and 17 year old to Vegas/Death Valley in about a week to see some shows, Hoover Dam and tour Death Valley.

We would be flying out of Seattle, although we don’t live near there.

I can’t decide if it is prudent to cancel or paranoid.

Thoughts?

I’d go. But I think there’s been a bit too much overreacting. I’m kinda looking at going myself.

I would cancel. New York just shut down Broadway. I don’t know if there will even be any shows in Vegas in a week or two.

I was planning on going this weekend but despite the fears they still want over $125 a night at most hotels. I normally pay $75 a night on non-weekends/holidays.

Cancel. Vegas will still be there after all this has passed.

I’m going there next week for work. Hoping casinos are less crowded than usual n

I think Vegas would be a bad vacation. But I am not changing any of my plans for coronavirus. I think it is an overblown run of the mill virus.

I’d sure cancel. Not worth the risk. “Making a sensible decision based on non-zero possibilities” isn’t “overreacting.”

The death rate elsewhere says otherwise. I don’t know many other viruses that have such a high rate of respiratory collapse calling for placement on a ventilator for 2 weeks.

But I bet Death Valley will be sparsely visited and starkly beautiful. I love that place!

No one knows the rate since people aren’t tested if they have a mild case. And did the “old” coronaviruses require a respirator?

I’m talking a ventilator, NOT a respirator.

And the high number of folks diagnosed with coronavirus who are dependent on ventilators to live, for such extended time periods, is very frightening to us medical professionals. An alarming number of older people are experiencing respiratory collapse due to the coronavirus, and requiring prolonged heroic measures to keep them alive long enough for them to recover. This is NOT a ‘run of the mill’ virus by any means.

It was never a choice of a destination for me and wouldn’t be this time except for two things. First, I would like to see Hoover Dam and Vegas is a good place to do that from. Second, I do want to see Death Valley and again, Vegas is a good spot to travel into and out of for that. So, the Vegas part is really just a layover between the other two parts of the trip. I figure we might as well catch a show or two while we are there, but otherwise I don’t have much interest in Vegas itself.

I’d agree about the virus being a big overblown if you are young and healthy. But obviously it has rather severe risks for elderly and otherwise compromised. The last thing I want to do is be a carrier that ends up killing someone else.

Because of the sources of factual information and expert analysis that you’re going to provide here, right?

Then stay home.

Does this figure in to your decision:

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak declares state of emergency after additional coronavirus cases

I’m seeing the Mandalay Bay for $70/night. But I also see others at the $125 you mentioned. I was booking Tuesday through Thursday, so that probably helps keep the price down.

Yeah, I should probably just close myself in my house and not go anywhere.

My state declared that 4 days ago.

Then rent a car. You can do it complete germaphobe in a car. Stay at campsites. And since it sounds like you are visiting parks, you are probably going to be less close to others than bored in your town.

Driving from Seattle to Hoover Dam is a much different exercise than flying from Seattle to Las Vegas and driving to Hoover Dam.
