Stage Performers

The Rolling Stones just rolled into and out of town recently and I couldn’t help but wonder how healthy these guys must be to go on multi-month (multi-year?) tours and rarely cancel shows due to illness. I know that it does happens, but I can’t remember the last time a large act cancelled a show in my area for that particular reason.

So how do they do it? How do performers avoid getting the colds and flu that everyone else seems to get? Do they isolate them from anyone who may expose them? Do they take preventative drugs that keep them healthy? Do they learn how to perform when they are sick? Or are they just as likely to get sick as anyone else and I just haven’t noticed it?

If you Google on “cancelled performance illness” and “canceled performance illness” you will get a 626,000 and 353,000 hits respectively (though lots of overlap). Happens all the time. In fact, the Stones canceled some European shows in 2003 when Mick was sick.
