Star Control 2 - going to play it for the first time.

Yes! You are definitely missing out if you don’t master the battles yourself! I’ve never played computer vs. computer, but if, as I suspect, it just pits 2 advanced computer opponents against each other, then there will be times in this game where you will definitely lose if you allow the computer to take over your ships vs. a strategically tougher opponent.

I’ve played against the computer enough times to know which weaknesses it has, and there definitely are ships that would lose in the hands of the computer vs. a better ship, but outright win if its in the hands of a human player. For example, a Syreen or Zoq-Fot-Pik vs. a Yehat is almost always a win for the Yehat, but if you know certain tricks, you can be the Yehat with no loss of life and almost no danger.

The computer is better at certain things though, such as shield manipulation and aim, but those things can be tricked.

You can zoom but I don’t know the exact keys for it. You can also set your ship on an automatic course too.

Yeah, the automatic course is usually how I pilot it. I was just looking to find how to zoom in so I could better see tight clusters of stars.

When you run into a combat situation, if you master the ships, you can save a lot of money and headaches by using cheap ships against them. Using the computer/computer autobattle, some of the following would be nearly impossible, but for a good human player you can probably win against the big guns with relative ease. For example (some spoilers because these are races you have to fight during the storyline):

vs. Ur-Quan
Almost any fast ship with a decent ranged weapon is an Ur-Quan killer. Just stay away from its big guns and you’ll be safe. Aside from the obvious quick ships like Pkunk, Spathi, or Supox which can destroy its fighters and plink them with speed or from afar or both, you can try the Earthling Cruiser. You won’t win if you start close to them, but if you can gravity whip using a planet and hit it with missiles, it’s not too difficult. Plus, the Ur-Quan won’t send any fighters after you due to your point-defense lasers

vs. Yehat
There’s a trick I use against some ships which involves letting the enemy chase you and then you matching their direction and velocity from just outside their weapon range. Start by going directly left or right, you can also use up and down but I find that the Y-axis seems to be shorter than the X-axis, giving you less room to work.

Anyways, when you’re moving in a perfectly straight light either left or right, with the Yehat still following you, turn around 180 degrees and tap the accelerator until your speed and the Yehat’s match (with some ships, you can’t match their speed, so just slow down just enough so that the Yehat slowly catches up to you).

When you’ve matched its speed, make sure its directly behind you. From there, assuming no stray asteroid collisions, you can simply hold the fire button down and poke the Yehat to death. This works great with Spathi, Syreen, Shofixti, Orz, Supox, Utwig, Thraddash, and other Yehat ships, because their weapons are either not that powerful, or not fast/numerous enough to get through the Yehat’s shields. But its pretty safe if you do it this way. Btw, it works with a Yehat vs. Yehat because since the other ship is chasing you, your weapons will have slightly greater range

vs. Slylandro

You can kinda zerg this guy down with a combination of point-defense lasers and nukes using the Earthling, or one completely safe way is to get the probe to follow a Spathi ship. At about medium distance, the probe will oscillate back and forth instead of catching up to the Spathi while you shoot at it with butt missiles

vs. Kohr-Ah
Kohr-Ahs, like their cousin Ur-Quans, can be defeated by a skilled Spathi pilot. Stay. Its funny but the flight patterns of the Spathi used to defeat both of these ships are essentially identical. Fly away from them at medium distance, get them to chase you, then zig zag back and forth so you stay at the max range of your butt missiles. Make sure no fighers flank you vs. the green Ur-Quan, and make sure you don’t move ahead too fast against the black Kohr-Ah so that their spinning disks disappear by the time you wrap around battle map

There’s a few other weird inconsistencies with the computer that make it vulnerable to certain ships. You’d never guess it, but advanced Arilou computer ships are pretty weak against Mycons. Try to stay at max distance or gravity whip yourself. The Arilou will take potshots at your ball of energy but usually get hit with it.

Computer Chmmrs are idiotically easy if you use the Thraddash and destroy all their satellites using the afterburner. The reason is that a human would simply turtle and stay in place, but the computer will chase you and run into the flames.

Computer Shofixtis are pretty much always going to suicide in battle. No shield protects against their explosion, so always go in with a ship capable of hitting them with long distance attacks. You’ll almost never be able to destroy them close combat, they will blow up before you get the final hit

If you fire while cloaked in an Irlwrath ship, you will always decloak facing the enemy ship. Also in super melee, VUX ships start their battles very close to the enemy, so that is the best way to kill them or hit them with limpets

Thanks for the tips, everybody.

I’m just going around now picking up minerals and building up the ship (it turns like a dream, now  ). I’m not seeing any armor options, but it sounds like (from what I’m reading here), that I will change ships throughout the course of the game?

Also worked a lot on building up speed - I can’t stand that slow crawl through a star system so I can enter hyperspace. I really like the physics of this game, where it’s quicker to travel long distances than short ones…

The concept of “armor” doesn’t exist in SC2; Having more crew makes your ship more durable, but there’s no way to “repair” this except going back to base for more crew. This is another reason you want to get better at combat.

You also never replace your flagship, but you will be able to build different escort vessels in shipyard (At the start you can only build the Earthling Cruiser.)

Btw, you probably have already encountered some indigenous life forms on planets while you were harvesting their minerals. Get as much of those as you can! You’ll find them useful later…

Yeah, I’m trading their carcasses in for technology and ship improvements…

No, no, they’re still alive and not hurt at all… well, so says the manual, at any rate.

This is actually a plot point in a couple of cases. All your little lander doodad has is a stunner.

Sooo…update? Have you finished the game yet?

No, not even close. I’m having a great time, except those occasions where I somehow lose my starship… without having saved it for the past half-hour.

I’m getting kind of tired of all these space battles. Really tired.

While they are, as I mentioned, sortof the core of game engine, there shouldn’t be THAT many of them. Why are you getting into so many? With upgraded thrusters your ship should be able to outrun 90% of enemies in hyperspace, and there’s usually not that much reason to be bouncing around occupied enemy systems.

Are you still getting attacked by the Slylandro Probes? If so, you should probably do something about that…

Yeah, unless you’re heading into the middle of enemy territory, most of the gameplay would be away from battles and on landing missions. And if you didn’t deal with the probes as soon as possible…

Yeah, I ventured out too far, now am completely f***ed. Went to Draconis, miscalculated fuel, now every damned bear-thing alien (Thraddash) wants to kick my ass. And they’re succeeding. :frowning:

On the other hand, the Thraddash cultures represent some of the most hilarious dialogue in the game, so there’s that.

Additionally, if you talk to and then kill enough of them, the Thraddash eventually say uncle.

I don’t actually remember what happens if you run out of fuel. Isn’t there like, an emergency Melnorme service for that sort of thing?

The Melnorme and also those guys who have the ship that looks like one enormous gun that you propel mainly through the recoil from the gun.

Yeah, I’ve been having the same issue. I thought I got a clue as to the Slylandro probes origin, but exploring that area revealed nothing. So maybe it’s a lot farther out (clue was about a line defined by two stars.) And I’ve also found myself in a part of space (bottom left corner,) where I’m being hounded by dozens of starships. Had to restore from a much earlier point, as I couldn’t get out alive.

You can only do that once you establish certain conditions I think. Its been a while, I might be wrong on that

And I think the Melnorme do pop up in hyperspace if you run out of fuel. Just remember that fuel is used on your landers too, I think, so when you are scavenging planets, you may use up more fuel than you realize and not be able to get back home.
