Star Trek Strange New Worlds season three {summer 2025}

I was amused when Pelia ran landline phones all over the ship.

I loved it.

However, it’s implied that time travel shenanigans have altered the timeline some, particularly when La’an and Kirk travel back to 2020, and the Eugenic Wars haven’t happened yet. So the story may not play out exactly the same as TOS.

I think you’re going with the idea that TOS had dates for things (1992-1996) due to the idea that when the show aired - those dates were ‘future’ - yet, since SNW is airing ‘now’ - the Eugenics Wars clearly haven’t happened yet.

That’s not ‘time shenanigans’ in the show’s timeline - thats just reality catching up with the TOS writers.

IMHO, of course.

And she had an Atari 2600.

And a BTTF clock.

Spoilers for all those smart enough not to watch Discovery:

Spock has an adoptive sister, Michael Burnham, who is the main character on Discovery.

Was it at least Cat 1 cable? Remember, they were being “jammed”!

I thought Spock’s main deal, according to Discovery, was that he disappointed his parents by joining Starfleet instead of the Vulcan Science Academy. It is just random backstory, though— so is the other thing.

THat was always the case - It was Burnham that was new to the Spock story.

Giving a character as well-established as Spock a sister from out of the blue is a pretty big retcon. You might be the only person on the internet to call it “just random backstory,” at any rate. Same thing with disappointing Sarek – it’s a bit more than random backstory, it’s been a fairly consistent through line in their relationship and informs on Spock’s character throughout the franchise.

Spock is an interesting character because he is not a robot. What drives him? Note that, because of his background, to be accepted (by Vulcans) he has to be more Vulcan than a Vulcan; yet he never ultimately chooses the path of pure logic… The thing with his father does make it personal and put aspects of his character in relief. Now, a (allegedly) brilliant but crazy emotional wreck of a sister (who also ends up joining Starfleet)… how does that fit into Spock’s story…

No, they call it out in the episode:

But, yeah, so many people have tried to influence these events, you know, to delay them or stop them.

I mean, whole temporal wars have been fought over them.

And it’s almost as if time itself is pushing back, and events reinsert themselves.

And all this was supposed to happen back in 1992, and I’ve been trapped here for 30 years trying to get my shot at him.

You’re probably right, but there’s a quote in my brain, and I’ve been going crazy trying to remember when / where / (gotta admit, IF) I heard it. It my have been the novelization version of Star Trek (2009).

… wait … YES!!! I thought I had thrown out that book, but there it is, on page 43 in my edition. After hearing about “the nature of [his] disadvantage”, Spock declines the Academy, and explains to Sarek:

Father, I can think of no greater way to honor our species than to attend Starfleet as its first Vulcan. Given a choice between ‘firsts,’ I have decided to opt for that one.

Granted that it isn’t canon, but at least I’m not going crazy.

was anyone else expecting the giant planet destroying ship to be the Doomsday Machine?

I am curious how a group of prewarp humans came to possess such advanced technology

It probably helps that they found a TARDIS.

If there was a sister ship that still exists this also could be a Borg genesis story …

As I wrote a few posts above, Spock being the only Vulcan in Starfleet was just something Fans believed back in the day and stated as fact (Fanon) but was never stated on screen. In fact it is contradicted in the Immunity Syndrome.

(I thought) it was in Journey to Babel that it was established that the reason for the estrangment was his decision to join starfleet. I am not sure it ever had to do with his being ‘first’. There was a quote by Sarek in ST:IV “I opposed your joining StarFleet”.

@AlsoNamedBort - You are, of course, correct - I had forgotten that quote. I still say they did that to write them out of a corner that the earlier writers created.

This episode was not as good as last weeks but was okay. The brother doing the documentary sounded more like a terminally online leftist in 2025 than someone in the 23 Century which was a little annoying.

Also it felt like a scene was missing when they launched the shuttle. There was a jarring cut between when they left and when it failed and it felt like I missed something.

It also made no sense at all that a war ship from the race being slaughtered who Starfleet was ostensibly helping would send a warship to interfere. It would have made more sense if they either were like the Scientist and trying to rescue the creature or were from the other race who was the aggressor in the war.

That was a slow episode, I’m not a fan of this style at all.

Many years ago MASH did a documentary style episode and it worked well. Community did one in the Ken Burns style and it was awesome. Sadly Strange New Worlds swung and missed.
