We’ll the internet been buzzing on this.
It seems to be quite weird.

Has the entire script been leaked and is downloadable on the internet?
I posted about this dude’s summary over in the Episode VII anticipation thread.
I hope this is accurate as I think it’s a really great premise.
That could be awesome.
Borrowed back from Doctor Who - who borrowed it from Star Wars - but it could be a great idea. Better than trade sanctions, at any rate.
I am going to have to go in the opposite direction and say that the premise supposedly leaked above sounds dumb as hell and unappealing to me.
I think it’s a big misstep to include the older Luke, Han, and Leia as played by the original actors. There is a lot of interesting movie fodder from the extended Universe that happens after Return of the Jedi, but it occurs while Luke is still relatively young. By featuring a 60ish Luke, they will need to throw all that out.
I don’t think the movie is going to be good.
This is J.J. Abrams we’re talking about, co-creator of Lost. We know he can offer an intriguing mystery, the problem is the payoff.
Needs more Ewoks.
They don’t need to “throw out” the expanded universe – it’s just a different universe. This could be a great story, or it could suck… but whether it’s great or not won’t have anything to do with how ‘faithful’ it was to the expanded universe.
Think of it like this – the King Arthur story, or the Beowulf story, can be told in many ways, with many variations, and we’re generally okay with this. The same can go for any story. In 200 years, someone will do an interactive Star Wars body-download-mod (a ‘BODLMOD’) in which you can play Luke Skywalker and decide to join Darth Vader and cleanse the galaxy. This will still be a fun, cool story, perhaps. And it doesn’t ‘ruin’ any previous versions – they all can still be enjoyed.
They already have thrown out the Extended Universe. It’s a completely blank slate.
Just re-watched the Bespin duel from ESB. Who put the glove on that hand? Also, how does a piece of debris from the surface of the planet make its way into deep space? Even if we allow the hand and lightsaber to reach the ground on the desert planet without being reduced to a cinder about the size of a Rice Krispie, that’s got to be Vader’s hand, flung into deep space by the explosion of Death Star Mk II.
From my reading of the link:
It’s not that hand. It’s another hand – i.e., sometime after ROTJ, Luke gets a hand cut off again, and somone finds it and brings it to Han and Chewie, and they go off to look for Luke because he may be in trouble (afterall, he’s lost another hand!). It sounds pretty intriguing to me.
Why are you spoiler-boxing a 30 year old movie?
Maybe because of how it relates to the new movie. Also, I’ll ask again, is there a full script link or just the brief summary I mentioned before?
[Nerd voice] According to my calculations, Luke Skywalker’s severed hand would not have been able to escape the gravity of the gas giant Bespin. If you’ll remember, Luke lost his hand in Cloud City and his hand would have fallen to the planet’s surface.
In conclusion, this can not be Luke’s hand. [\Nerd voice]
One thing I’ve been told was explicitly thrown out is the New Republic.
What was Han Solo piloting? I would bet good money its an old Star Destroyer.
Not his original anyway, but anyone who isn’t colourblind could’ve told you that without doing any calculations since he had blue lightsaber in ESB.
Float from Bespin to another planet in only 30 years? Was the lightsaber equipped with hyperdrive?
It could be Luke’s other hand.
