Star Wars Episode VII anticipation thread

But if it were possible to watch the new movies without seeing (or with ignoring) the prequels–and to maintain notions of an indeterminate, mysterious hypothetical backstory to the original movie–that would be a big asset.

I definitely think we will be lucky if we get more than 5 minutes of Luke. It might be less than that, even.

I have heard he is filming episode VIII right now, though. I have to think he spends quite a bit more time in that one, perhaps agreeing to train someone again.

Bah, and it wasn’t even that long ago. I guess I know where the idea came from…

That’s all fine, Rex is cool. But nothing at all about The Force Awakens looks like those first three movies. This looks like a sequel to Return of the Jedi, and I’m fine with that.

I really, really hope we get more than just five minutes of Luke, and that he doesn’t turn to the Dark Side. That would totally suck.

Yes, it was purposeful IIRC. I forget whodunnit.

Only in the minds of overgrown fanboys. In the same trilogy, Jabba recognises quickly that Luke is not a real Jedi and also that he is using a Jedi mind trick. Obi Wan clearly states that the Jedi were instrument of the Old Republic. The mission briefing in the first movie ends with, “may the force be with you”.

That’s not actually in conflict with what Frodo wrote. Most people thinking the Jedis are a lot of nonsense is not incompatible with some people (particularly people with connections and power) knowing what the real deal was with them.

Of course, by the same measure, there’s nothing incompatible with people in the OT not knowing much about Jedi, and the way they’re portrayed in the prequels. Galaxies are big places, and in real life, most people have trouble keeping up with everything happening on the planet they’ve spent their whole life on.

I’ll concede that Jabba’s actions go against what I said, but the “may the force…” saying is just a religious/spiritual/cultural thing, I say “adios” to people when leaving but I’m an atheist.

Frodo, Proud to be an overgrown fanboy :).

So to further what you wrote; in the OT, most of the characters who we see are either lower level people (Luke, Han, etc), or those higher levels who would not have seen Jedi in their professional life (Leia), while in the PT, most of the characters are political leaders who deal with the Jedi or Jedi themselves.

I really appreciate the secrecy for this movie. I still know very little about what will actually happen and I can’t wait to see something completely fresh in the theater.

I saw Indy 4 without knowing much, either. I know it is an unpopular view, but I really like that movie and it was a lot of fun seeing something fresh.

Even liking that movie, I hope they did a lot better with this than they did with that. It was good, not great. I hope this is great.

I think we’re about ready to make our last minute predictions. We have less than 2 months before release and I imagine internet spoilers will go nuts even quicker. I’m sure some charity screenings and so forth will begin in early December.

I predict:

1. Luke is in this less than 5 minutes.
2. Rey and Kylo Ren are brother and sister.
3. Han Solo dies - bold prediction, but I’m going for it
4. Both Rey and Finn have the “force awaken” in them. Future Jedi.
5. Kylo Ren’s redemption will be setup as the story-arc.

You?

I’m not sure what else, plot-wise, to predict. I expect that since JJ Abrams is good at pilots for TV shows, this will actually be quite good. I’m glad he is stepping aside and letting others make the final two movies, though. And I’m glad Lawrence Kasden is there to make sure things are good all the way through.

Probably. He won’t be on long, but I trust Hamill to make it memorable.

:eek: Enough with the long lost reletive trope. Let Rey be Obi Wan’s bastard daughter, that might be better.

Likely, but too predictable. Maybe they can have his fate be ambiguous like in ESB?

I would say that is a certainty.

For fucks sake no. Lets have something new.

Probably impossible. Rey looks way too young (the actress is 23). Do we know how much time has passed, in-story, between A New Hope and The Force Awakens?

Who knows how long Alien pregnancies last.

It’s supposed to be about thirty years since the end of Jedi, so closer to forty for Star Wars.

I’m pretty much down with the same predictions other than Han dying. He should die in a blaze of glory, but I hope it’s in IX.

I think we won’t see Luke until close to the end of VII.

One thing I’m grateful for, no CG Chewbacca.

“Luke goes to the Dark Side” was already done in the EU, and despite a lot of people praising Dark Empire, I found it kind of silly. I doubt they will go there. Though if they do, the only way I wouldn’t object is if Luke starts wearing clown makeup, gets a purple 3-piece suit, and dyes his hair green.

Considering Abrams’s apparent love of referencing the past and flipping it around backwards (see Into Darkness…), I fully expect Leia to tell Rey, “No, I am your mother” or Kylo Ren to tell Luke, “No, I am your son.” I’m kind of dreading it, actually…

Haha oh shit you’re right.

Abrams fucked ST:TOS in the ass. I am dreading what he’ll do to Star Wars. Ok, the movie was good and enjoyable, but The Kirk in the film has little resemblance to the actual original character. The brooding captain has been replaced with the guy with three alien STDs.

Only three…?
