Star Wars Episode VIII anticipation thread

It did screen for the first time last night and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

Spoilers, so far, are being pretty well contained. The movie was good enough that most people are zipping their lips. Still, avoid all spoiler-like sites.

People, including some contest winners that are not from the press/media,* have seen* the movie now. Factual spoilers do exist!

Note: Just for consistency sake, I will create the Episode IX anticipation thread once this one is out! 4 pages in two years this time!

Matt the radar technician (“Hi, I’m Matt”) is actually Kylo Ren…

I’m a teacher and one of my students bought me the Episode VII poster at the theater two years ago.

Where is the best place to order the Last Jedi theatrical poster(not the teaser one). I want full “movie theater” size. Anyone know a good place to buy it?

Not a spoiler since this is from a trailer I just saw. I saw Rey using Kylo Ren’s red lightsaber, looking like she was fighting with imperial soldiers at her side. Looks like we’re in for an ugly surprise :frowning:

Well, we’ll know soon. Less than 26 hours for me!! And nog 3d, IMAX or 4d…old school 2d as it should be.

Aah, it’s a trailer - no doubt they’re good guys in disguise - we know Finn’s wearing a First Order officer’s uniform when he fights Phasma in the trailers. They’re going back to the same well they’ve drunk from - repeatedly - since Episode VI.

You know its going to be ESB. Not just inspired by ESB. The same fucking movie. Like SWVII was A New Hope.
Whose hand is getting cut off? Who is the secret child of who?.

I don’t think it is.

The reviews I’ve skimmed say 1) avoid spoilers, 2) A lot of unexpected stuff happens.
I have a “bad feeling” that Luke and/or Rey will go dark (or possibly Kylo and Rey will reject Luke and Snoke and head off on thier own which I would prefer)
I’m trying to aviod spoilers, but I must know – arrg!

Way too simplistic, amigo.

OK, last minute predictions before I see it on Thursday or get spoiled before then:
Luke has become disillusioned with the Jedi way, having seen it fail epically, twice. He trains Rey for a bit, but won’t go as far as she wants/needs, out of fear, and she leaves. Snoke tries to get Rey to turn to team dark side. But she (and Kylo?) come to the conclusion that the whole Light side / Dark side split is to blame for the galaxy’s problems, and that they need to embrace their whole selves and become something neither Jedi nor Sith to finally bring the balance. And I don’t know what the heck Finn/Poe/Leia/Phasma/Hux get up to. Probably blowing some stuff up. Maybe a heel-face turn for Phasma. I’m thinking Leia lives (getting written out in the Ep IX opening crawl) and Luke dies, though I hope I’m wrong.

I’m trying to avoid spoilers like the plague…but as far as predictions go, I think this one is all about balance. Like in the first teaser video, you hear Rey say “light…darkness…” and then Luke mentions “so much more.”

Gonna be a “grey area” here, something in between that creates a balance.

And I do kinda see the point of post #188 - I can already see the similarities to ESB : one apprentice training alone in a remote location while the rest of the characters are having a big battle against evil forces.

The review embargo has ended, and I’ve skimmed several reviews – the vast majority are quite positive. Be careful, though – there are moderate spoilers in several reviews. They don’t appear to spoil the ending or any twists, but they do spoil what appear to be early and mid-movie plot points and motivations.

Reviews are positive, but not “100%” positive by any means. It looks like it is a really good movie.

IGN gave it 9.7/10, while AVclub gave it a B+.

CNN’s movie critic finds it less satisfying

Yes, I read that as well. I definitely think the movie must have its flaws. I’ll find out when I see it.

It’s settling at 93% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. Perhaps it will dip or rise some still.

95% from top critics when I looked. I am not reading any for fear of spoilers.

One problem with this theory is that it would mean Luke is now playing the same role that Yoda did in the original trilogy. I just can’t see them handling Luke that way.

Well, I saw it a few hours ago. I think I still need some time to let everything sink in, but definitely don’t regret going… many “crowning moments of awesome” in there.

As someone who was born in the eighties, I’m walking around with a big grin because I feel like I experienced new developments in the Star Wars universe for the first time (I was spoilered the hell out of Force Awakens… and that was pretty much a copy of A New Hope anyway).
