Star Wars Episode VIII anticipation thread

Cool. I really think most people need to see it 4-5 times on DVD/streaming before judging it, but how would you rank it right now compared to the other Star Wars movies?

I found Episode VII went up quite a bit in my mind upon re-watching it, especially since my kids watch it with me most times.

Difficult to say. I rewatched Episode VII last week and still like it quite a bit… a lot of stuff happens in VIII and not everything works for me, but many things do (and were not what I expected). I feel there is great addition to the whole of the 9 movie saga, but am not quite sure how it stacks up as a movie on its own.

At the moment I am inclined to put it above The Force Awakens… and really, I’m half tempted to go see it again tonight:) (or soon at least). In any case, if you liked Episode VII, I think you’ll like Episode VIII as well.

Personally I’m pretty happy with what Disney has been doing with the Star Wars movies and thus far I have liked all three of the movies they have done!

I’m going to a screening of Dreyer’s THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC tomorrow night, followed by whatever midnight screening I can attend of this, which has to be the most bizarre double bill ever.

I ordinarily would let the crowds die down for a day or two, but social media being what it is (I haven’t even read anything in this thread to avoid spoilers), I’m afraid anything might be given away accidentally on one of my various timelines so that seems to be the most logical solution to have my experience untainted.

There is now a “seen it” thread. I don’t even want to hover over as I don’t know if the OP has spoilers, but it might
FYI

Brian

What, you think I’d put spoilers in the OP? Please.

Hover away.

Thanks!
Brian

I started reading a review the other day, then stopped immediately. I already know too much now, dammit.

Unlearn what you have learned, you cannot.

I also tried to avoid spoilers but saw one. It was my own fault, the thread (in the Ars Technica forums) did say potential spoilers. I have been following the thread and there hadn’t been any and I foolishly thought it may be too early for any.
Maybe someday I’ll be be better in avoidance. I think I did hear about Han dying in TFA but there was a lot I didn’t know like how much Luke was in it and I am glad I kept as much as a surprise as I did.

Brian

After my disappointment in TFA (a *third *Death Star?!? pfffft), I vowed not to reflexively march back to the box office and pad their receipts the next time around. But now my resolve is weakening. So I want to hear from those who felt the same about TFA and have seen this one already. Is it a lot better? More original?

Note: I liked the Force Awakens a lot.

However, I will spoiler-box some things that indicate that Rian Johnson(director of VIII) may not. Maybe these will make you want to see it. Some spoilers for sure, but if you weren’t interested, you can at least look.
Luke ditches the light saber Rey hands him immediately. Almost a direct insult to the first movie, kind of.

Snoke tells Kylo Ren to lose the stupid helmet. He does.

General Hux is the butt of most jokes, now. Can’t be taken seriously.

Snoke ends up with zero backstory and is killed with no fanfare. Like, halfway through the movie.

Rey’s parentage is revealed quickly and, if true, turns out to be nothing interesting.
Seriously, I don’t know if you’ll like it more, but it is definitely different.
