Star Wars Episode VIII anticipation thread

I died of the cute…

when the porg copied Chewie’s roar.

Seriously, wtf is that thing?

I see him in all the toy stores and he’s EVERYWHERE at Disney right now. Obviously Ewok 2.0, right?

I also died of the cute… but not in a good way.

Judging by the many positive reactions I’ve seen, it seems that they’ve pushed all the right cuteness buttons for most people this time, something Disney is expert at.

From the Daily Mash:

F**ked-up space penguin to be best thing about new Star Wars

Here’s a gripe: How many versions of AT-ATs do we need?

I loved loved loved them in Empire and Jedi and they’re arguably my favorite thing in the entire series, but the more they’re used, the less impressive they become.

Empire = Badass and intimidating and helped with a win

Jedi = Scary at first, but eventually turned into a joke

Rogue One = They were just kind of…there I guess? They weren’t proper AT-ATs, but they were definitely fan service.

This Trailer = So now they’re bulkier? They’re the Saint Bernard version? ETA: Not Saint Bernard. Those horses with the hair on their hooves…Clydesdales? I think?

Enough with the AT-ATs!

What was up with interstellar penguin dude? Is he the new Han Solo?

Or BB-8 2.0 (whom I adored and ignored the Ewok cynicism).

Perhaps they were a CGI technology demonstration? You could see through the middle of them.

The walkers in Rogue One were At_ACT (All Terrain Armored Cargo Transport)s

The one in the Ep VIII trailer is (I believe) an AT-M6

Brian

I like the design of the AT-M6. (And I’m looking forward to the eventual saga movie, Bessie and Porg.)

The original AT-AT was based on an elephant, though I thought of them more like camels really. The new ones, AT-M6, which does not roll of the tongue, are based on gorillas.

The Porgs are required because, if you watch the scenes at the end of The Force Awakens on Luke’s island, there are a bunch of birds flying around. Those are puffins, but obviously you can’t have real-world animals in Star Wars, so now they’re Porgs.

More like the aforementioned Gorillas. Or chalicotheres.

I predict that there will be a scene where the nuAT-ATs are attacked by not-Snowspeeders and somebody is going to try and trip one by wrapping a cable around its legs. And then the nuAT-AT will step out of the cable and prove itself superior to the old versions.

But I really hope I’m wrong.

If he is used minimally, no issue. If he’s throughout all the time, annoying.

I thought he was this movies baby-Groot.

Read my link from post number 120 above.

Upon reading these links I take my statement back. I now, officially, like the idea of the empire evolving and changing the design to learn from their mistakes.

I also like (spoiler for new ship design)

the new “Mega-class” Star Destroyer Supremacy. It seems to be essentially a mobile shipyard, able to build other ships, even up to “standard” Star Destroyers. It makes sense to have a shipyard that you can move around and hide rather than being a fixed target for enemy attacks.

Ok, after having seen that trailer, I’m fairly certain I’m going to break down in tears when I see Carrie Fisher in the movie itself.

All I can say is I avoided all trailers and information for The Force Awakens and I really enjoyed the movie, and I will follow that same pattern for Episode VIII.

Having backwards-facing feet on the AT-ATs seem like a not-very-good design as well. I’m no intergalactic engineer but it seems having rounded pads like the original walkers will distribute the weight best or have a forward-facing foot would keep it from dragging on the ground should it be damaged or whatnot.
