Episode VIII will release May 26, 2017: Forty years (and one day) after Episode IV (yes, I am aware it wasn’t named that until later)

Episode VIII? Doesn’t sound very “stand alone”. What’s happening to VII?
VII comes out this year (2015). VIII is set for 2017. Rogue One is the ‘stand alone’ set to come out 2016.
The plan is to have a Saga episode come out every other year, and one-off episodes unconnected to the saga in between (maybe prequels, like a young Han Solo adventure, or maybe concurrent with the new episodes using all new characters. They’re keeping it very close to their chests). There will effectively be a new Star Wars movie every single year for the foreseeable future.
Yeah, but VII is actually coming out 1 1/2 years from VII, so that is a bit quicker than expected. However, VII was delayed from the original(and near impossible to reach) May of this year.

I’m reservedly excited to find out if “Rogue One” references Rogue Squadron.
