Stargate Atlantis – Oct 12th, 2007

Did Stargate Altantis run more than an hour last Friday? For some reason my DVR seems to have cut off the last bit even though it recorded for a full hour.

The last I remember seeing was (space to move spoiler down away from mouseover)

Ronon beating the crap out of his “buddies” when he finds out they gone over to the wraith

Can someone tell me what happened after that?

Haha, you’re lookin’ on the wrong board, RJK. The Gaters don’t come 'round here no more.

Ronon beat up his Satedan comrades, killing one. The one played by Mark Dacascos turned and left the melee when asked by Ronon whether the killing needed to continue. Ronon walked through the Wraith facility and, upon being found by the Atlantis team, was asked by Shepherd “Where are your friends?”

“Right here,” he said, tersely acknowledging his betrayal and indicating that he realized who his true friends really were.

You are right though … it ran a little long because even mine cut off the last minute or two as Ronon sat in his quarters silently reflecting on the events during the last scene.

Thanks anamnesis!

I did kind of notice I hadn’t seen many Stargate threads recently. But I figured there’d be at least one doper who saw it.

Thanks again, and damn my cheapo DVR that isn’t smart enough to keep recording when the show runs long.

As he was sitting in his quarters sulking that he’d just killed his friends, the dopey female one who after three years I still can’t remember her name (Rachel Luttrel?), comes in with the painting that we saw on Ronins wall earlier, apparently Rodney had confiscated the painting without asking for permission first and decided that if Ronin was going to stay he can have the painting back.

Ronin gets his “oh Rodney, you rascal” face on and that’s pretty much the end.

I was so disappointed we didn’t get a T’ealc / Ronin scene, oh and more Rodney / Sam scenes would be good too, in fact they can sack Rachel Luttrel and bring on Claudia Black (mmm Vala) and this show would be pretty much the perfect replacement for SG1, just imagine the snark between Rodney, Ronin, Vala and Shepherd

Aww, that’s mean. I think. I’d hardly call her dopey, but I have to say partly agree by saying she’s probably my least favorite character. I dunno, there’s just no hook to her. She’s very athletic, and a good singer, and a decent enough actress, but the character just doesn’t have any meat to it. ::shrug::

That would be awesome, particularly if they had a sparring match. Talk about a clash of the titans!

I agree as far as taste goes when it comes to Claudia Black’s sultry look being far more sexy than Rachel Luttrel’s ice cold stoicism. I don’t think Luttrell’s a bad actor, or bad to look at, but Teyla’s a bit of a one-dimensional character. As far as Carter and McKay, I’ve little doubt there’ll be plenty of tension, awkwardness and arguing between them all season; the two most brilliant minds in the galaxy are now running Atlantis! It’s the one thing I was most looking forward to. How can anything possibly go wrong now? Well, I suppose if Vala crashed the party …

I hate Rodney.

Hate hate hate Rodney.

Last week, he was trying to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow or whatever the hell he was doing, they asked him to hurry up, so he stopped to explain, in great detail, how he couldn’t hurry because it was so difficult and if he did one thing wrong it would blow up the ship and he’s so much smarter than anyone else and blah blah blah…the third time that happened, my wife screamed at the TV, “Shut up and fix the damn thing!”

“Even though we’re in a hurry, let me explain for five minutes why I don’t have time to give you a proper response to your question.”

Christ I hate Rodney.

I never did understand the logic of those who watch shows with characters they don’t like. Or characters they hate. Or characters they hate hate hate. If one character on the show elicits such hostility, then why watch? Seems awfully self-defeating to me … but then, I have to remember to remind myself that the degree to which people henpeck televised entertainment on the internet can be quite mind-numbing. Must be one of those glass-half-empty type things.

I was thinking that exactly at the beginning of the episode. Teal’c really needs to pay Atlantis a visit and spend a few minutes mopping the exercise room floor up with Ronin. Not that I dislike Ronin, but he was kind of a baby this episode and could use some schoolin’.

Yeah, I agree. Clash of the titans it would probably be, but my money would still be on Teal’c. Cooler heads always prevail in a combat situation, and colossal biceps certainly wouldn’t hurt either … unless you’re on the receiving end of them.

I watched A Dog’s Breakfast (well worth checking out btw) the other day, with the guys who played Rodney, Carson, Teyla (thanks for the reminder) and a special appearance by Chris Judge, and I had to make the comment to my brother that Teyla was better in the Farscape spoof in that than she is in Atlantis.

I’m not sure what it is about her, but she just rubs me the wrong way.

Exactly, now hopefully the Atlantis writing team are Dopers.

I can see it now, Rodney is stuck in a Jumper running out of air, and fantasizes that both Vala and Sam come to his rescue in nothing but bikinis… I dont think that any one could complain about the rehash with that scene in there

How can anyone hate Rodney? I believe that his sister is coming back at some point, so you’ll have someone bashing him at least

I like Stargate. I hate Rodney.

We got it the first time … you hate Rodney. Congratulations. Since he and Shepherd only take up about 90% of the screen time on the show, it makes perfect sense to keep watching so you can continue getting angry at him. Have fun with that.

I’m impressed with the OP’s restraint. I once vowed to stop watching anything on ABC after their flirtation with starting and ending shows at five minutes after the hour ('cause my brain-dead Scientific-Atlanta PVR can only record at the times the IPG lists the show at). Luckily, in Canada, first-run Atlantis is carried commercial-free on a movie network, so it never comes close to the hour run time that the IPG gives.

Add me to the list of people underwhelmed by Tayla’s character. I don’t hate hate hate her or anything, it’s just that I’m not as involved with her as with most of the rest of the cast. Suffice to say that killing Carson instead of Tayla was a Big Mistake in my books.

I hope Carter gets story development at least on a par with what Weir got. As one of the most experienced off-world operatives, she has the potential to be a much more “hands-on” leader than the good Doctor ever was. I don’t think this episode did much to develop her role, but it’s early yet and I’m willing to wait and see where they go.

I like McKay, although sometimes they overdo his intellectual cockiness.

I can’t remember what ep it was, but recently when they were having a crisis in the control room and McKay said, “I hate to admit this, but Zelenka isn’t infallible,” I laughed out loud.

They dropped the ball with Teyla. Who is she anyway, and what does she do there other than show off her belly button? She’s not a representative of her people anymore, and her little connection to the wraith doesn’t seem to warrant her position in the lead group. After Sheppard, she’s basically third in command of Atlantis? Why? I don’t mind the actress or the character, but they need to justify her being there, and make it interesting.

Samantha has more experience fighting more bad guys, on more planets, solving everything with her genius skills than anyone, and it’s been a bit disappointing how meek she’s been so far. Also, Carter, McKay and Zelenka makes three geniuses which is probably two geniuses too many, although I really like the Zelenka-McKay interaction. But I’m afraid Carter is one genius too many, so she won’t be the genius very often. If she’s not the genius, what’s she going to do? Being appointed to Stargate/Atlantis command is almost a death knell.

Sorry for double posting, but I missed the edit window. Another thing I was going to bring up, is what’s up with Telya’s and Ronin’s clothing anyway?

I think I’ve seen Telya wearing earth military issued commando garb, but mostly she walks around dressed like a primitive. And Ronin? What’s with the medieval wear? We know his home planet wasn’t that unlike earth, so why didn’t he ditch the hercules outfit once he was done being a runner from the wraith? Just once, couldn’t they put him in some clean clothes? I bet he’d cut quite the figure in a nice clean, pressed black commando outfit.

Oooookaaaaay…remind me never to have an opinion around you then, as you’re rather incapable of understanding the concept.

I’ve often wondered about it myself. I just figured that Teyla and Ronon are so righteously noble that they can’t abandon their cultural ties and continue to wear the clothes they brought with them. I suppose for Ronon, it also serves a functional purpose since he’s particular about how he carries his weapons. What I’d really like to know is where he keeps getting fresh “charges” for that big energy pistol he totes around. You suppose he just plugs it into the Atlantis power outlets? And if so, did he remember to bring his Satedan-Atlantean voltage adapter?

I don’t know about hate, but I don’t like Rodney, either. (Though it came damn close to hate in “Lifeline,” when he wouldn’t shut the fuck up.) And yet I still enjoy the show because I like everyone else, even underused Teyla. A little bit of Rodney goes a long way.

How come? And did they just sort of drift away, or was it a planned exodus?

Eh, I like Rodney. Although I don’t remember that particular scene, to me it always seems the opposite. He doesn’t want to take the time to explain in simple enough terms to everyone what he’s doing. He’d rather just do it. But they keep pestering him until he stops and explains what is going on.

I was actually surprised to see Chris Judge make an appearance. Glad to see that there’s hope for a cameo every now and then from the original SG-1 characters.

And I’ll actually say that I think they’re handling Carter’s change from team member to head honcho very well. She’s gone from being a member of one team…although a very important team…to being put in charge of a whole command. Her advance in rank during SG-1 came about more because of what she did, without her having to change job positions where she’d gain that leadership experience. While her experience with advanced technology and general off-world ops does make her the perfect person to put in charge, she really doesn’t have a lot of leadership knowledge to draw on…so it makes sense she’d be a bit off-balance at first. I was actually impressed at her being able to take the hard stand on not bending the rules for Ronin’s friends.

That’s it. He doesn’t like explaining to simpler minds what he’s doing, but after Dr. Weir was out of action, Sheppard had to tell him to keep him up to date. Plus, Rodney loves telling people how what he’s doing is super complicated and only he could do it. I remember a couple scenes lately where he’s had one second to reprogram the hyperdrive converters or whatever, but then with only one second to do it, he stops and spends 30 seconds or more telling everyone how he’s only got one second to reroute the phase inverters or they’re all doomed. Just do it, Rodney!

There was one scene after Sheppard had told him to keep him in the loop, that Rodney was explaining something to Sheppard in really simple terms and Sheppard said “you dumb that down anymore you’re going to get hit.” I laughed.

Good point. She was a scientist Captain when she first joined SGC, then made it all the way to full bird Colonel without actually ever having held a command position. That’s pretty unprecedented, and she should have some settling in issues, now that you mention it.

Saving the galaxy with your own wits is one thing, commanding one of humanity’s most important military and strategic assets is quite another.
