Starhunter TV series

So I vaguely remembered this show which played in syndication on a local broadcast station back around 2000, thank you to the posters which helped me find its name.

It had two seasons apparently although the second one is basically a reboot with only two cast members in common, it was also shown under a different name Starhunter 2300. I haven’t seen any of the second season but I have watched most of the first season, keep in mind if this review seems kind it is because the first season DVD set is selling for less than five USD

Holy shit I forgot how much this thing is like a low budget badly written proto Firefly! Let us count the ways…

Malcolm and Dante are almost the same character, the only difference is Dante is scarred mentally by losing his family. Shit they even dress alike.

Both have a female second in command muscle.

Both have a young spritely female engineer/tech that the crew feels protective toward.

Both have a human dominated universe with no aliens(aliens are part of the backstory in Starhunter but are not seen).

Both mostly concern the seedier side of the universe, in this aspect Starhunter has the guts to go further than Firefly. I liked the prison episodes where the perky female engineer gets caught up in a plot to sell pretty female prisoners into sex slavery. You just know with central law enforcement breaking down thats exactly how nasty people would start getting.

Both have a lived in ship and reality where things are always breaking down, I like the fact that the Tulip only has a few decks with life support despite being gigantic. Why would you waste time having life support on the whole ship if there are four people on board.

Both concern the use of science to develop super human abilities.

Firefly is FAR superior however in that sense its not even a contest, it also is far more realistic. I do wonder however if Joss saw this show, the similarities are interesting.

Starhunter is a good background show, and at less than the cost of a combo meal the price is right. The writing is bad though, it gets better towards the end of the season. Production values are low and episode plots end up feeling repetitive, they also go on way too long as the average episode is 50 minutes in length(I don’t know if deleted scenes were added back on for the DVD or what).

What did I love? The human dominated universe with no rubber aliens in sight, hell right now I’m watching an episode about an unscrupulous private prison company make before 2001  Talk about relevent!

Heh anyway.
