Who the fuck do you think you are that because you are somehow incapable of ignoring threads you dislike that he must stop posting? That goes beyond jr modding.
Maybe you should learn to use the ignore feature if can’t simply not click his threads. And disavow yourself of the notion that because YOU don’t like something it should go away.
I never read any of his threads, because I don’t give a shit. But I’d rather have 10 idiot STARTs than one damn fool who think because he or she doesn’t like like something it should go away, instead of just fucking ignoring it.

Well, you certainly have it wrong in my case, anyway. In the past, I was one of the Dopers offering START a bit of advice or a shoulder to cry on. In this thread, he complained about having to pay someone a premium to use thier credit card to pay for his membership. I offered to use my PayPal account to front him the money for his renewal at cost. And in this thread, where Bosda was sponsoring START’s renewal but was having trouble hooking up with him, I again offered to pay his way. I even said there that I wanted to be sure START stuck around, even though at the time I was starting to have my doubts about him.
But these last bunch of posts just set off my bullshit alarms, and I started taking another look at START’s threads. His OPs are formulaic, usually following a pattern of “I did this stupid thing” - “I feel sorry for doing this stupid thing” - “Am I right to feel sorry?” - Hugs all around. This has gotten too common for it to be anything but contrived. Parse the OPs and you will find that START hits hot buttons that are nearly guaranteed to kindle strong reactions that divide readers into camps which then begin to spar without further input from him. Most of the time, he starts a riot and then goes home to watch it on TV.
Sorry, I don’t buy it anymore. I know he’s like the SDMB mascot or “pet adolescent” or something and as such he’s bound to have a shitload of people rushing to his defense. But what the hell, he always does. It’s part of the pattern.

Skewbald had a lot going in the Pyjama Pants Girl thread. The girl was sexy, the wild horses were cool, the beach scent romantic and the writing quality was excellent. I hated to see the fantasy end. But hey, I like Santa and the Easter Bunny too, what can I say?
START, now, he ain’t as much fun or as easy to read as Skewbald, Laura ain’t as hot as PPG, and there’s no beach. Second rate all the way.
The timing was exactly what made me suspicious of it. It was the first time he’d gotten THAT bad of a shellacking here and suddenly his brother “dies”…I didn’t say anything at the time because I didn’t want to crap in a “my brother died” thread, just in case there was anything to it. I’ve since lost that tinge of doubt of my instincts on this one.
At first START and Laura seemed legit but now there’s absolutely no way I’m buying it.
First for the maturity level he displays his writing is surprisingly good.
But above all any one of his OPs alone would be credible but all taken together… come on. The likelyhood of everything being true is extremely small.
You were doing well START but this last OP was really pushing it. Too many fortuitous coincidences and implausible situations. You should have known better. Maybe that was the idea, to see how much you could get away with.
And the “Is stealing clever” thread got locked “in light of his situation,” which, while I think was probably the right thing to do under the circumstances (assuming, of course, that it was legit), was also a pretty blatant demonstration of just how much of an effect pulling on the ol’ heartstrings can have around here (not that I’m judging the mods, because as I said, I do understand the reasoning…just saying, is all).
Not necessary, I think. The pig blood scene has largely entered cultural mythology, and teens especially would not be unlikely to know about it, whether or not they’d read the book.
I’ve had a weird feeling while reading START’s threads for a while, but I’ve had a hard time just placing what that weird feeling was. The Laura threads helped me figure out what it was.
Simply, I think that START is a jerk.
I was one of the people who wanted to help him grow up and be more mature, and felt like he really wanted to change too. Even then I had a bit of an ‘off’ vibe coming from him, but hey, he’s young, and I don’t relate well to anyone I view as less mature than I am, so I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, and believed that he really would change with the help of posters here.
His recent threads to me have all had this undercurrent of “Hey, look at me, I’m more mature now.” Thing is, he isn’t. He hasn’t changed at all, and at this point I don’t think he even wants to. He’s just learned to censor himself so that he looks better, but underneath he’s the same old START.
I believe everything that he’s posted (including the latest thread) but frankly, if I were going to school with him I would’t want anything to do to him.
I’m 21 (anywhere from 3-5 years older than Start claims to be), and I didn’t get the Carrie allusion. Not that I’m some expert on cultural mythology or anything (not hardly). Haven’t seen the movie or read the book. There was a TV remake in 2002 (according to IMDB). Just a data point, I guess. It’s certainly plausible he may have read or seen it. That’s really a minor point in the scheme of things (IMO).
I got the Carrie allusion in START’s thread, but only because I read about it somewhere in some entertainment magazine. I’d really like to watch the original Carrie, but it looks like a gory and bloody film to me (yes, I know, I can be such a wimp sometimes). I can’t watch those, no matter how fascinated I am with them. Kill Bill was pretty bad for me. I felt bad for START when his brother died, but now, I’m not really sure what to say about his story about him and Laura.
I can believe that START is older, maybe 18-22 but simply extremely socially inept (Asperger’s, perhaps, or something else). People are trying to put a numerical age behind START’s behavior, but I disagree- I’ve met plenty of people my own age who demonstrated a confusing inconsistency when it came to maturity, and I was startled by their blatant cruelty/lack of ethics given their occupations/ages.

FWIW, IF START is legit, he’s like a teenage version of Wildest_Bill, in that he’s constantly posting some asshole shit, then when people call him on it, he just starts, “But I’m TRYING to change!!! I don’t know WHY you’re so mad at meeeeeee!” schtick that Bill had.
Oh, and I think he likes horror movies, so it’s possible he’s seen Carrie on cable or something.
The blood thing was referenced in the earlier thread here and is probably why he threw it in. Although it rings false to me as well.
I don’t get all the posters who replied to his thread going “I know you’re a good person but these threads make you look bad.” How do you know he’s a good person? All I know of him is what I read here and I think he’s a dick if the stories are true…
