Starts with '*'. Ends with 'jpg'. And I want to see it.

So… I’ve got this compact disk crammed full of pictures in *.jpg format. There are hundreds of them, so opening them one by one in Windows Explorer is getting tedious. Plus they open up to twice the size of my screen.

I’m looking for some sort of application that will allow me to open them all up, and view them in whatever order I see fit. Sort of like a visual Winamp. Does there exist a free, downloadable program that will let me look at these pictures by a more efficient means? Or am I condemned to forever load them manually, and scroll around to see all of someone’s face?

Thanks,
wolfstu

I know that Windows XP has a slideshow option that it gives you for viewing a folder with mostly (or all) picture files in it.

I would look on the 'net for a “slideshow” program and see if you can’t find one that lets you create a slideshow from pictures on a CD. If it’s like WinAmp, it should let you create a playlist of sorts.

I know there are programs out there, so either search around or hope someone else on here uses one that they can tell you about

On other option, if you have Windows, is to view folder contents as thumbnails…which I can’t remember if non-XP versions of Windows does…anyway, go to My Computer and select the CD drive and open the contents of the folder, then choose “view” and choose “thumbnails”…if your OS has it.

boy what sucky advice…

The only application you should be using is ACDSee. It’s hands down the best image viewing app there is. It will let you do everything you want plus much more:

If you want a freeware program that’s pretty good, then Irfanview is supposed to be pretty good:

But ACDSee is what most people use. The “Classic” version is better than the newer 4.0 version.

IMO, Irfanview (linked above) is better than anything you can pay for too. Get it.

I downloaded Irfanview and it is nice.

Thanks much for the link!

I personally recommend XnView. I has a slideshow file explorer, but I like using it to open an image and then use the mouse wheel to scroll through all the images in the directory. It also opens about any image format imaginable and has some handy other features.

Another vote for IrfanView. The “Filter Factory” and “Filters Unlimited” options under the “Image” tab, “Effects” sub-tab is incredible, once its set up (which is a bit confusing)

Yup, I use http://www.irfanview.com/ and it does everything you need and more. ACDSee is also nice.

Another plug for IrfanView. I use it many times a day. It’s ultra quick, feature packed, FREE…

The other advantage is that it is easy to install and uninstall - just copy it to a folder and run. If in the highly unikely event that you don’t want to keep it, just delete the folder. There are no messy hooks to dig out of the Registry. Nice and clean!

I think that in XP you can view them as Thumbnails which gives you a view of all of them in any folder. Perhaps this is available in other versions of Windows, but I am not sure.

Thanks, all.

I downloaded IrfanView. It’s quick, small in size, and does the job quite adequately, so far. And if it turns out to be insufficient, I’ve now got a few other options as well.

I’m running Windows 98. It does not appear to have the suggested “view directory as thumbnails” feature.

It does have a “Directory as Thumbnail” feature. Press the “T” key, or go to File-Thumbnails. Easy as pie.

And, of course, right after posting that I realized you were talking about Windows 98 and not IrfanView. Nevermind!
