Well, as already mentioned above, the refrain “We live in a decaying age. Young people no longer respect their parents.” has been voiced throughout the entirety of recorded history. Is there any evidence that the situation is particularly different now from how it always has been?

I meant authority as in “cultural influence”, not authority as in “trying to keep the whole system from falling the f*** apart”.

Some authority is to be questioned, but some is not. Public schools are quite good at teaching differentiation of the two.

I assume any analysis of parental difficulties faced today as opposed to, say, 30 years ago would have to conclude that it is substantially harder now. I wasn’t raising my children 30 years ago, but I can think of a number of issues which would be simpler to deal with or even non-existent back then.

Not to interrupt the usual love-fest, but I believe the distinction to be kept in mind is that between unwed teen pregnancy, and teen pregnancy in general. In 1957, a pregnant 19 year old was likely to be married. In 2009, she is generally not. (Cite).
Since Starving Artist mentioned sexual promiscuity specifically, it would seem clear that he was not discussing married teen-agers.

A fair point, but he didn’t distinguish between the two; he simply said that teen promiscuity has led to an explosion in the teen pregnancy rate, which is simply not the case.
Another thing to consider is that in the '50s a pregnant girl would often get married immediately. So you’d have to extract women with babies born 9 months or less after the wedding from the married statistics. Then you’d have to factor in how many preemies would be born naturally, and how many women would get pregnant in their first month married naturally… it’s a complex thing. Just looking at how many married versus unmarried tells you very little about pre-marital shenanigans.
But in any case Starving Artist is still a moron. And Shodan is still remarkably short sighted and unable to appreciate nuance.
