For a fun summertime activity, I propose that we all meet and see the Staten Island Yankees for their Thursday, August 22 game against the Batavia Muckdogs.
The game is at 7:00 p.m. at the lovely Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George, just steps from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. As most New Yorkers know, the ferry is one of the best free rides in the City. And the ballpark has an amazing views of lower Manhattan.
Ferries run frequently from Manhattan to get to the game, and every half-hour from Staten Island towards the end of the game. Several subway lines take you near the Manhattan ferry terminal.
Regular ticket price is $10.00, but depending on how many people sign up, I may be able to get us a deal. Also, food and drink is really cheap there, compared to the prices at other ballparks around the City – their hot dogs are only $2.00. It’s great family entertainment, so feel free to bring kids of any ages.
For the Observant Jews among us, the ballpark has a Kosher Kiosk, serving certified Kosher hot dogs, kinishes and other goodies. They also have an evening minyan after the sixth inning if you’re interested.
So let’s hear it: Take me out to the ball game . . .
Of course, they’re not the Cylones baby, but I’m so down with minor league baseball, I’m thinking of trying out, just so I don’t have to pay those pesky $10 fees.
Where’d we sit? I hate those RF seats where getting the food takes 45 minutes. ++ungood.
Ace, I’m not sure where we’ll be sitting. I’ll try to get something good for us, cause I gots me some gonnexcions.
The speed of the food service there has been improving over the season (and compared to last season). Hot dogs were quick all over when I was there earlier this week.
I start grad school orientation that day, so I doubt that I’m available. (Of course, if I received some communication - any form of communication - from my grad school, it might help me figure out what’s going on.) If I am free, I’d love to come - I’ll get back to you once I pester them for some kind of schedule.
Does the ferry go back to Manhattan after the game? I hate leaving before the game is over. If it doesn’t, I could end up stranded in Staten Island, a prospect I do not look forward to…
Zev,
I’m pretty sure it does, but it may be hourly. I am sure it runs from Manhattan thru the night, I have a friend who lives there who has been known to catch a late one or two somehow…
The ferries run from Staten Island to Manhattan every half hour on the hour and the half, so getting back is not a problem.
The ride is about 25 minutes, and the Manhattan terminal is next to the N/R subway and a few steps from the 4/5 subway. Unfortunately, the 1 subway to South Ferry is out of commission for a few more months (darn terrorists).
Darnit, darnit, this is just the kind of thing I’d love to do with a buncha Dopers, but that’s the week we’re taking Baby tlw down to Ole Miss to meet the extended family. Why am I away or busy every time the NYC Dopers get together?!!?
Oh well, have fun at the ballgame. Eat a kosher dog for me, someone.

If you’re a maybe, or someone new, please post or e-mail me with the number of people who will be going, preferably before 4:00 on Wednesday. Most likely I can make adjustments after that, but it’d be better to know then.
For those who want to take the ferry over together, we’ll meet at the Manhattan ferry terminal at 6:15 SHARP. Meet upstairs to the Left of the sliding door to Slip #1 (between the sliding door and the newsstand). I’ll be e-mailing all of you with my cell phone number and details on how to get there and pick up your ticket if you can’t meet for the ferry.
