Statue of Liberty question

Is the one in New York the largest, or are there others of the same size?

Do you mean, compared to similar Marianne/Columbia/Mother Russia type statues around the world?

OTTOMH, there’s a whopper of a triumphant lady statue in Russia… Mother Russia statue, Volgograd.

Of course, a sword-wielding “Mother Russia” isn’t exactly a beacon of universal liberty; she’s more likely to be driving Jews (to pick but one group) out of her lands than inviting them in, but as she’s holding a mighty big weapon, I should probably curtail my comments. [grin]

Re. size comparisons, both for Liberty vs. Russia and for various Ladies Liberty throughout the world, here ya go.

Mother Russia is indeed much bigger than Lady Liberty, but I’ll take our torch-bearing girl, any day.

The OP is probably thinking of the one on the Seine in Paris, depicted in the recent Nicholas Cage movie.

I don’t have the exact numbers, but I believe the one in Paris is significantly smaller.
Pic here

The one in New York is over 151 feet high. The one in Paris is only 35 feet high.

There’s one in Brooklyn that’s about thirty feet tall.

Motherland is one scary bitch. Lady Liberty has that blank expression, so you can take her as being indifferent or aloof… but Motherland is pissed and ready to slash somebody with that big ass breadknife!

I believe she’s concrete, and there have been concerns about her upkeep after the fall of the Soviet Union. Presumably a piece of her fell off at one point!

One comparison that’s often missed is that the Statue of Liberty itself very much resembles the ancient Colossus of Rhodes. Both statues were made of interior scaffolds with a relatively thin “skin” of copper or bronze, depicting a large figure holding one hand aloft and with “rays” projecting from the head. Both statues stood at a harbor entrance (although the Colossus did not bestride the harbor, as often depicted. That would have been beyond the engineering of the time)). The statues were similar in height. The Colosus about 100 feet to Liberty’s 150.

There is a 20-meter, 60-foot replica in Tokyo. New York’s is 151 ft., pedestal and base adding another 154. I’m not sure if Tokyo’s 60 ft. includes pedestal and base, but from the picture I would say it does.

From Wikipedia:

I saw 2 statues of Liberty’s on a street corner yesterday, they were pushing a tax preperation service.

There arehundreds of replicas of the Statue of Liberty located around the world, including a half-scale replica at the New York/New York hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dammit, racer72! This is GQ, dude.

How tall were they?

Is that a hockey stick?

Ah, the wonderful world of Photoshop humor contests. That statue would probably be called, “Glorious Spirit of Red Army Olympic Hockey Team, 1964-1976” or somesuch.

I have been given to understand that the Russian infantryman of WWI had some unusual armament, so WTH.

Hmm wouldn’t the Crazy Horse memorial trump them all?

We here in Canada need one of those.

It’s hard to beat this Statue of Liberty.

Pretty much. Crazy Horse is planned to be 563 feet tall at completion. The Statue of Liberty is 151 feet tall (305 feet with its base). Mother Russia is 270 feet tall. The only statue that compares to Crazy Horse in size is another proposed one, the Spirit of Houston, which is planned to be 555 feet tall.

Don’t forget the Statue of Liberty in Las Vegas!

1/2 scale.
