I don’t know where this should go…moderators, feel free to move as needed.
Did everybody catch the photos of this funeral? The man was a lifelong Steelers fan, so they put him in an armchair on front of a TV for the visitation (see the slideshow).
For myself, I’d rather not HAVE a funeral, but really just cremate me, have a brief (preferably upbeat) memorial service, scatter my ashes at my favorite beach, then get on with your lives.
That was neat. He looks very cozy there with his TV and remote. I was thinking at first he’d be sitting up in the chair, but he’s actually leaned back with the chair reclined. Kind of like my hubby when he falls asleep in his chair.
A friend of mine lost her father suddenly immediately after his favorite basketball team won the NCAA tournament. She says they decorated the room with lots of ballons in team colors and a banner or two. Made his friends happy, thinking of how much he loved seeing the team win the tournament.
This also happened to be only a month or two after her mother died, following a prolonged illness. For her, they had lots of red ballons, because she particularily liked red.
Personally, though, I think subtler is better, more appealing to me, anyhow.
Funerals are for the living. I guess as long as the planners aren’t doing something disrespectful…erm, why not?
But it’s also a last chance to make a joke and that’s hard to pass up. At mine I’d be tempted to have some guy play “Billy, Don’t Be A Hero” on bagpipes or something.
