OK, so about once every 4-5 years I get a craving for Orange soda. It burns itself out after a can or two because… Orange soda is just too… much. I dunno, it’s too sharp, too strong, too much.
I’ll go on record as saying that I don’t care for Cream Soda at all.
About a month ago I got that craving for Orange soda again, and after walking down the aisle and looking at Fanta, Orange Crush and a couple of other brands, hit the specialty bottles and saw Stewart’s Orange & Cream soda. I thought, well maybe it’s smoother and less too much than regular orange stuff. Worst case, I can pawn it off on my nephew.
I just polished off my third 4-pack since then. It’s awesome, and it’s not making me feel like I’m going to end this run and stop drinking it for another 3-4 years. Hell, after breaking my medical test related fast on Tuesday, I drank 2 bottles of it.
Anyone else tried this out?
If not and you really want to participate in this, then my question is: What other soda have you tried that you didn’t think you’d like that you went YUM to, or what combination of flavors were you skeptical about that made it past the initial taste and became part of your regular rotation of sodas?
I’m not much of a soda drinker, but sometimes when I’m at Whole Foods I’ll indulge in a can of their store-brand orange creme soda. It’s really good, tastes like an Orange Julius. I think it’s sweeter than Stewart’s, but that’s good stuff too. Sometimes with Mexican food deliveries, I’ll get a Jarritos tamarind soda.
I got a Sunkist out of the work fridge a couple months ago and wow was I disappointed. It didn’t taste right at all; kinda chemically. Yuck.
Of course I say all this while a can of diet Pepsi is sitting on my desk. That tastes chemically, too, but in an expected way. If that makes sense.
If you’re ever in the midwest stop by a Menard’s and pick up some Sprecher’s Orange Dream. Smoother than the Stewart’s stuff.
Even better is their Cherry Cola. Made with Door County cherry juice.
When I visited Ann Arbor, Michigan, a couple of years ago, I acquired a taste for Vernors, a soda that is unknown here in New York. But I’ve made a rough approximation by mixing about two parts ginger beer or strong ginger ale with one part cream soda.
In fast food restaurants that serve iced coffee, I’ll add just a shot of that to a cup of Diet Coke. Gives it a kind of chocolatey flavor.
They sell it at Rainbow (Roundy’s). I dunno. I wanted to like it, but it tasted too much like when you go to a place that doesn’t actually carry Cherry Coke and the soda jerk has no clue how much Cherry flavoring in and just goes overboard.
I may give it another shot. Maybe I got a batch where the guy adding the cherry juice slipped up.
