Stickiness in GQ

I can’t recall whether it was last year or the year before, but there was an excellent thread in GQ which listed a heap of online resources. I once had the thread bookmarked but my computer vomited all my bookmarks when it crashed.

I remember that Manny participated in the thread and that it’s been bumped occasionally since then, but up until now there’s been no capability within the software to keep it in constant view.

What are the thoughts of the mods, admins and members of making it a sticky thread in GQ so that this wonderful list of resources is always available to us?

That’s an excellent idea! I’ll try to find out.

(shameless plug) I started a list of all those references at my webpage, but I never finished it.

Found it and stuck it.

Thanks for the suggestion!

We can’t actually edit a thread, can we?

I just noticed that theres a lot of chit chat in the thread up until towards the end of the first page where people start posting all the useful reference stuff.

I’m not trying to be picky, just aware that if people can’t jump straight into the resources they mightn’t bother using the thread itself as a resource.

Could we cut and paste the posts which list resources into a kind of “GQ FAQ” and make that sticky under either a “moderator’s notes” or “have you looked here first” title? It would make the thread considerably shorter (and thus save bandwith), and encourage more people to use it.

Sorry for making more work for you Manny, my intention was to save all of you guys work in the long-run.

Cleaning that puppy up would kill the hamsters. I put it there as a placeholder until we can get a proper FAQ together.

We’ll get there in the fullness of time.

I can C&P it for you guys and post it as a new thread - just don’t want to be accused of cross-posting if I do so.

BTW Manny, I think the lights look magic. YMMV.

As another shameless plug, I’ve been considering putting such a list up on the Dopers Downunder site. Well, I’ve been considering it since I first saw this thread resurface yesterday. Whaddaya reckon, reprise?

tomndebb also posted a list of reference sites back in April 2000. There is some overlap with Alphagene’s list.

Excellent idea TLD. We will need to get permission from the CR first (can’t see that being a problem), and then we can add all of the local databases to the list.

As we can actually delete posts without messing up a thread, perhaps we might want to put up our thread and then provide a link to it? We can’t do “sticky” with our software - it’s a PITA to try delete individual posts here : perhaps we can come to some arrangement?
