Stock Market Game - The Teeming Millionaires

Eleven days is a l-o-n-g time.

Well, with 5 days to go, it’s still phantom, beatle and oldscratch wrangling for the medals; everyone else has lost money.

Few of them have lost as much as me!

Here are the latest rankings.

Looks like I’ve finished dead in the middle of the pack.

Thanks for the game, sdimbert.

Dittums, sdimbert. It was a lot of fun.

I was biting my nails on the last day, as beatle had pulled ahead. Turned out I won by a little. Whee!

Yeah, pantom, I think I briefly pulled out ahead on Thursday (2nd to last day of trading), but was back in second slot by Friday’s close. All hail pantom!

Still, it’s a bit mind boggling to realize that, tied to the real market as this game was, I could have really made $28K in less than three months (I signed up about a week or so late) based on my picks. I think (I’m not looking at the rankings right now) that pantom would have realized a ~$33K gain and oldscratch, our free-form socialist, would have bagged about $6K. Annualized that’s a 24% ROI, not bad.

Those are the three of us who came up with positive numbers. CnoteChris experienced a software fuck, but still staged an impressive late game rally. It was all for naught, in the end. And I imagine Scylla might be going into hiding.

IRL I really have taken a position in QQQ. Now I wish it was with play money.
Oh, well. It ain’t a loss til ya sell it.

Anyone interested in another round?

I laughed, I cried, I… learned. I hate it when that happens without me knowing it.

Anyrate, I had a good time. I learned, or had the notion re-inforced, that information is the key. The more of it you know, and the faster you can get it, the more you can make off of it. Pretty simple idea, but hard to have work in your favor.

Another round? You bet!

Two suggestions-

  1. Is there a better/different site less prone to delay and software glitches?

  2. For God’s sake, if you do start another simulation, could you please start a new thread about it?

Your new thread suggestion made me laugh out loud. Can do!

As far as another site, gimme a little time. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

You got me so addicted (beginner’s luck, I’m sure, but that’ll getcha every time) that I’m already in another contest on that site - and getting my poor butt whipped. But I’m willing to do another Teeming Millionaires contest…

as defending, and undefeated champion. (Damn, but that sounds good!)

By the way, beatle, what’d you invest in? (unless you want to use this in the next contest and don’t want to say.) I mean, only 3 transactions and in second - I’m jealous bigtime.

Yeah beatle what’s the deal with keeping your investments secret!

Don’t you trust us?

I mean, look what happened when I took another dopers investment and tried it for myself. NUAN dropped like a rock!

I’m up for a round- I didn’t even notice this thread a month ago.

I did some checking and can’t find any sites with games that look more solid, banner-free and easy to use as the one we were using.

**Chris]/b], since you’re the one who had a problem, would you be willing to give it another shot?

Can anyone else suggest a site I’ve missed?

I know that e*trade has a game, but you can’t create a group game yet. I’ll keep an eye on them.

SD

The same simulation is fine with me. With over 472 trades to my name I guess I was bound to run into some kind of glitch sooner or later.

I was hoping there might be a better site but can’t seem to find one that is as easy or allows seperate groups.

With that said, by all means use the same site.

You gotta ad this to your sig pantom:

Achieved #1st place in the Teeming Millionaire’s Stock Market Challenge!

WTG for the top 3!

Will I be allowed to participate in the next game, or am I banned for my abysmal performance?

Sorry, folks; I didn’t realize I had my portfolio set to private. And it would’ve been 2 transactions if that site had executed my initial buy orders correctly.

No secrets; I split my investment roughly equally between Seitel (SEI on NYSE) and Unit Corporation (UNT on NYSE). Seitel is a seismic data supplier with an oil & gas subsidiary (DDD) and Unit is primarily a drilling contractor (Unit Drilling Company) with an oil & gas subsidiary (Unit Petroleum Company). As CnoteChris observed, access to information is the key.

So, I picked two companies with whom I am quite familiar. Seitel is a company that has been around for a bit and has a colorful crew at the helm. Manny peoples have lost big $$ with them, but you can make money with the them if you know when they’re running up the stock price. Unit is a more reserved outfit with a steadier approach than Seitel (and they’ve been around at least twice as long). They were trading @ ~$19+ today and I’ve recently seen them valued @ $40. Takeover target? Not likely - they’re more likely to be the ones acquiring a smaller contractor or oil & gas company. Oh well, there’s my secrets.

sdimbert, I’m up for another round. As before, I’ll probably stick with outfits I know something about.

And Scylla, pal, I was just kidding; I hope I didn’t piss you off.

Read my mind, Silo. See below.

I mean, I’m humble, but not to the point of excess.

So, what’s up? Are you guys going to do this again? I did not see this the first time. In fact, I started getting registered and everything, thinking that it was going to end dec 31 2001, then I noticed the date on the OP. But by then, I had already registered. So I will play if you all do this again.
