The only real reason I posted that was because I had been very active in the debates, and didn’t want someone wondering why I hadn’t responded to any of their questions. I realize there are a myriad of election threads, so I just picked one where I thought it fit best and took off.
Well, I’m from Georgia also, so I guess your friend and I have different takes on what we observe. I’m going with the definition of “sophistication” as meaning “more knowledgeable and disillusioned” as well as “more cultivated and urbane.” I grant your point re: TV and the internet, but I live in a rural county and work in an urban center and I can tell you there are still some radical differences in mindset between the two. Please understand that I don’t entirely agree that a more basic and simple approach to voting is “tragic”; I don’t think it precludes awareness of the issues in any way, and can provide a good moral yardstick for decision making.

Yes, I agree. I think this was the part of Stoid’s statement that stuck in my craw the most. It wasn’t so much the “unsophisticated” label, it was the overall superior attitude and the use of the word “tragic” in describing these peoples’ reasons for making political choices.

Even if you’re right, you’re highly disruptive; if you’re wrong, you make a newbie’s first posts very uncomfortable, and he/she/it might even leave the board. We don’t want to scare away new posters by having the regs descend on them like screaming demons because they “think” they’re a troll or a sockpuppet, and it contributes to an overall rancorous and suspicious tone of the MB to have accusations like this flying about. Email the mods/admins with your suspicions and we’ll check them out; eschew troll and sock hunting.

johnson, frankly, I can’t disagree with you. But that aint the point. I understand that Miloss and Freedom despise Stoid for what she’s written in other threads; what I object to is their deliberate obtuseness and provocative twisting of Stoid’s words IN THIS THREAD to support their hatred of her. I’ve always considered that a dirty rhetorical trick used by people who can’t support their ideas with logic.
Both of these posters are of course perfectly free loathe anyone they want to and deride any comments they feel are particularly risible; hell, I’ll even join 'em if they make their points well enough. But when they choose to misinterpret remarks so egregiously as to set up a straw man misrepresentation of their opponent, they lose my support and a good portion of my respect.
Say what you will about Stoidela’s political tunnel vision, she at least has not stooped to the level some of her detractors seem to prefer. Her offensive and insulting remarks are directed at particular ideological groups. I consider that a divisive and unproductive method of debate, but it’s also a commonly accepted method, one that’s employed quite frequently by some of the very people attacking her for it! There’s a word used to describe people who make those pot-kettle accusations…

Oh but Gaud they do…decend, screaming and accusing. Remember those months back when my first posts were usually to the religion threads. I simply couldn’t understand why Christians were constantly the recipients of so much vitriol on this board. I couldn’t for the life of me understand why someone as intellegent and cultured as yourself could be so insensitive as to constantly make fun of this group, misguided though some of them may be. Do you remember? Of course I stopped posting, I stopped warning the big dummy newbie Christian posters from making silly illogical statements. Maybe Friend of God got me out of that, he was if nothing else convinced of the divine. Wonder if he still prays for the heathens on the SDMB? I was very concerned at the time about the lack of civility on this board.
Xeno is right about just about everything in this thread. A few months back in addition to taking heat for my pleas to treat the Christians a little more kindly I took an awful lot of heat from Southerners. Very few posters that hailed from south of the Mason Dixion liked my proposal that they were contributing to their own negative sterotypes. Any of you guys remember…Southern Style…VAHermit. They hated my diatribes on the romance Southerners have with the Civil War. They defended the waving of that damned Tennesse Battle Flag with that same old “heritage not hate” line. I was even accused of not really being Southern because I’m from Virginia and not Georgia. Made me chuckle to thinking about how long a Georgian would last around here if they labled most of my fellow Virginians not really Southern. I’m sure they’d at least give you a tour of Monument Avenue and the Museumn of the Confederacy before they tarred, feathered and dragged you through the swamp.
