Well, I don’t know myself, MZ. Maybe those 5 months they’re not having to pay me for are my contribution toward safeguarding SS for the next generation? My attorney just said that 5 months comes off everyone’s retroactive time. I will try to find out when I go for my paper-signing at the local SS office.
Motorgirl, thanks for that advice! I had not even considered this and right after I saw your post, I googled an article where exactly THAT was discussed.
Now that the hearing is over, I have to say that the judge who heard my case asked some very important questions and actually listened to me. I wasn’t nervous as much as I was frustrated that day, because up until then I felt like no one was listening to me.
Broomie, three years is too long for any of us to have to wait for money we are entitled to. Hopefully this will all be over for you and your husband soon as well.
Zip: Reminds me of the joke someone told me once. “I have Alzheimer’s, but at least I don’t have Alzheimer’s.”!!!
I meant to also say a special thanks to some folks who helped me with some great legal advice:
Oakie, Mama Zappa, Panda Bear 51, Broomstick and my flying chopper buddy, Johnny L A!
If I’ve left anyone out, please let me know, but these great Dopers corresponded with me throughout the whole time, and without the benefit of their knowledge and advice I wouldn’t have been able to keep hanging in there.
I am just so fortunate to have you all as friends and I love all you Doper guys and girls whole bunches. Even those of you not into “touchy-feely”.
That’s good to hear, Quasi. I know you’ve been agonizing about it and waiting for it, and now it’s finally coming. I hope it lifts a great weight off your shoulders. You don’t deserve to worry so much.
This is “D” (Dondra). I too wanted to add my thanks to all of you for helping us and for keeping Bill’s spirits up, and yeah, he’s a worrier. He also carries a lot of guilt he doesn’t need to: He thanks me for working and makes things easier for me by doing the housework.
As I told him many times, we’re partners and when one partner isn’t able, then the other one picks up the slack. Yes, it’s been rough. I’m just glad I could work. I am also very grateful for what you all did for us during the time we had to file bankruptcy. It’s a kindness we both will never forget, and as Quasi says, we’ll pay it forward WHENEVER someone’s in need. Thanks again.
I understand they have to make sure not just everybody can get it, but I will never understand why they make it so friggin’ hard. Still, YOU WON! Party time!
My mother used to be real pissed that every year she’d have to pay extra income tax. “It’s them who pay me and them who do my withdrawals, so why don’t they learn to count? I shouldn’t even have to file, much less pay more than they have already kept! This blows my budgetting every! Single! Year!”
Enter Littlebro, aka FinanceGuy: “well, your income is from SS.”
Mom: “Yes.”
Bro: “That’s Madrid. But, because you live in Navarra, your income tax is calculated by Pamplona. It’s not Pamplona’s fault if Madrid keeps doing its best to forget we have different tax tables, Mom…”
Mom: “:smack: :headdesk: :burn the ear of every politician she knows:”
Glad to hear you finally got the SSDI, Quasi, about bloody time!
Quasi? One critically important thing. Find out if you have to pay taxes on this. Further, find out if this affects your previous year filings.
Seriously. Do not get screwed here.
Secondly, congrats! Finally!
Thirdly, didn’t D have some kind of financial disaster? I missed the end of that? Like, ‘they’ wanted a lot of money back from her because she ‘worked too much’?
