Yes. Do get help with the taxes on your lump sum payment. Some people make the mistake of considering the lump sum payment as income for the current year. I believe the proper way to do it is to break it into the years that you would have received it if it weren’t for the fact that the SSA employs spastic monkeys with rubber NO!!! stamps nailed to their hands as disability determination evaluators.
For example, say your date of entitlement is 1/01/2008, and you finally get approved on 1/1/2011. Say your reimbursement check is $30,000, and you receive it 3/1/2011. Instead of claiming the entire $30,000 as income for 2011, you can break it down into what you would have received in 2008, 2009, 2010, (and 2 months in 2011)–something around $10,000 in each of those years.

OMG!!! Yes, D and I wanted to come down for the music festival in April, Lacunae Matata, but it all depends on when the SSDI check comes through, same with our trip home to Germany.

I am convinced that the disability program just does this because they hope you’ll kick the bucket before they have to start paying. :rolleyes: If private insurance had a 3 year waiting period, they’d be squashed like a bug in a rug.
I have a good friend who is a disability lawyer…and a homeless friend who is going through the application process. I have an idea of what you’ve been going through, and can only imagine how great it feels to get through it.
