I just watched the 1956 movie “Storm Center” for the first time (I’m amazed that there are still any Bette Davis movies that I haven’t seen).
All in all I enjoyed it, but not as much as I should have, considering the subject matter (a librarian dealing with censorship). I can’t fault Bette Davis’ acting; it was, as usual, compelling. But I was rather disappointed that her character stood up for herself . . . and then became rather passive after she was fired. And there was something about the storyline of the kid that didn’t seem genuine, how he was conflicted about her, in ways that would seem more appropriate for an adult than a child. Am I right about this? And I can understand how the townspeople turned against her (this was shortly after the McCarthy years) . . . but suddenly supported her again at the end. It just seemed to be very unrealistic.
Anyone else see this movie, and can support/contradict my somewhat ambivalent response to it?
